The Inquisition drives constructive discourse off the forum and now the forum is bye bye baby.

I'm not sure who you are referring to as "The Inquisition", but my sense is that lots of factors drove constructive discourse off that forum, including many members of that forum.

It evolved into people agreeing with each other while criticizing most Americans.

Actually got ugly with recrimination and posturing. Once was fun to eavesdrop then no fun.

[sarcasm]I never would have guessed.[/sarcasm] I eavesdropped every once in a while, and every time I was reminded why I had left.
While I was disappointed with our admins' decision to cut out politics from this board, given the experience at the CEB, I certainly didn't blame her.

It was bad news when a crew of opinion pirates came over the Bootleg railing and seized the place. What was scary is nobody seemed to mature or mellow. Their love of political mono-culture mated with red-ant-swarm reflexes got old fast. But we owe it to some of those guys. The culture they loosed and reveled in was one factor that helped spawn the Cardboard.

I enjoyed it for many years. But the football board there is dead. So I guess it’s time to cancel. I’ll have to figure out how. Anyone out there know a good board to actually discuss issues? I’ll take my answer in a PM. Thanks

+1 Lex. I haven't seen another open board like the original CEB.

This makes me sad, or at least, reminds me that I'm sad that what it once was is gone.

I think the last people remaining would have taken pride in the label "opinion pirates".

The Current Events Board had declined, IMO. I think there was a deterioration of civility and respect toward other participants. It had become an increasingly strident ideological echo chamber. A number of people cut back their participation or left altogether. As Boston Card pointed out, the experience of the CEB illustrates the reasons behind this board's ban on political discussions.
