I'm watching the UW@Cal replay, so I thought I'd scout Washington a bit.
You'd think a team that is winless in the PAC-12 would be a relatively easy game. It won't be. It will be ugly; it likely will show all of Stanford's weaknesses. Cal struggled, but eventually won. I hope we are that fortunate, but I wouldn't be surprised if we weren't.
The announcers touted Washington's defense, and said they were close in all their losses. They started out in a full court press but Cal picked it apart for lay ups and easy baskets. Washington couldn't stop the taller Anigwe. Based on those easy shots, Cal hit 61% in the first quarter. But UW kept with it and Cal stopped scoring so easily. Turnovers, in the form of overpasses, took their toll. Cal started off in a 2-3 zone, but later dropped into a man-to-man. Washington hit some treys to get them back in the game. Cal only hit 19% in the second quarter.
Washington played a lot of zone throughout the game.
The Washington coach thumbs her nose at the coaching box. She was regularly 10' further down the sideline than the box, and was out on the court with both feet as the play was going on in front of her. At 0:02 in the 2nd Q, watch the coach step on the court, about 6' from a Cal player attempting to make a 3pt shot and try to disrupt her shot!!! More than that, another coach or staff member is out of their seat, kneeling on the sideline, which is ALSO a violation. I can't be sure he is trying to disrupt the shooter from the other side, but he lunges his body forward toward the shooter as she tries the shot.
Anigwe got a bloodied nose when she stuck her foot between a rebounder's legs and then pushed her to the side. The opponent's back hand caught Anigwe in the face.
Anigwe got her 3rd foul as she undercut a UW rebounder with 4 minutes left in the half. UW was already getting back in the game, but with Angiwe out, they were contending. UW got their first lead shortly into the 3rd quarter.
The 3rd quarter was very even. Into the 4th quarter, UW was only down 2. But then Cal pulled away by about 6 points, and UW could not make it up in time.
About half UW's shots were 3s -- they hit 11 of 30. They scrambled a lot, challenged inside the paint, applied full court pressure, and enough pressure to cause a number of Cal turnovers. UW averages 10.3 steals per game but only had 6 against Cal.
4 players each got about 30 minutes. Season for the team: 40% FG% 32% 3PT%
In PAC-12 play,. #4 5'10" Melgoza is averaging nearly 23 pts/game (5pts from 3s, 6pts from FTs) with a 47% 3PT%.
Starting line-up was 6'1", 5'10", 5'9", 5'9", 5'6";Â Not starting, but getting 28 minutes was a 6'1" forward.
Alanna will probably have another good night scoring. Kaylee will have a good night rebounding. Nadia/Maya can also have good nights. Where I'm worried is Marta. She's good dribbling one-on-one, but it is her passing in a chaotic situation that is often weak -- overpasses and interceptions. Considering the press, we'll probably have 2 bigs plus Brittany, Marta, and Kiana, with the usual frequent rotation of guards. While I hope Brittany gets her shot back, I think our offense will come from the bigs. The main thing we need to do is to avoid the turnovers & especially the steals.
