Well, one thing that happened to him is that he has always been overhyped. That's mostly because people confuse volume with quality.
It's not that he's been bad, just that he's not been "one of the best QBs in college football".
By my eye, he doesn't have a strong arm, doesn't have good pocket presence, and doesn't have enough athleticism to make a play when it's not there. But, he's accurate on short routes, tough, and doesn't usually do stupid things.
He also hasn't improved.
2014Â PER = 140.4
2015Â PER = 145.9
2016Â PER = 145.6
2017Â PER = 144.8
Those aren't terrible numbers, but only good. Nationally that ranks #43,32,30,33.
[In 2014 he didn't play enough to qualify, but that PER would fit in at #43.]
Hilinski looks like a physically more talented guy, at least he is more mobile and has a bigger arm. He was a fairly highly regarded recruit, #43 QB overall, #24 Pro style, according to 214 sports in 2015.
While he may put the ball up for grabs, I also fear he is much more likely to have a monster game against us that Falk would.
I expect we'll see Falk - at least at first.
