Shaw's note indicates it comes from 2015 tax filings. My guess is that "winning the conference and Rose Bowl" gave him some nice incentives.

As an aside, last time I tried to find Shaw on the relevant form he wasn't on it, despite almost certainly being more highly paid than the people listed. I figured we were doing some shenanigans to keep his salary secret, but this was before the 2015 form would be available so perhaps that has changed and we'll have a better (even if consistently out-of-date) idea of his pay going forward.

Exactly.  I don’t know what Buddy Teevens made while here, but given our AD at the time I bet is was close to the lower end of the spectrum.  I would not have called on anyone to hold back his criticism of Buddy (or Walt) because they were “only” making ~$1 million or whatever they made.

Conversely, the fact that Shaw makes $5 million is really neither here nor there with regards to criticism generally speaking.  But as CT notes, much of that criticism is based on flawed premises, so the fact that Shaw makes $5million doesn’t make it any less wrong.

Notre Dame football is a MUCH bigger deal).  Almost makes you want to congratulate them for being so thrifty.  Compared to Arizona's Rodriguez,  UDub's Petersen looks like an absolute steal.

Do they list bonuses separately? I suspect purse strings are part of it, but it could be bonus payouts. I'd be really quite surprised if winning the Rose Bowl doesn't net Shaw a pretty penny, (though I guess that wasn't a particularly good season for Tara so I dunno).
