The question is whether the inconsistency implied by our use of multiple quarterbacks impacts Stanford's offense less than the uncertainty of having to face multiple quarterbacks impacts our opponents' defenses.

I counted one delay of game yesterday, in the face of play clocks that didn't work, no burnt time outs (Utah had two), and one false start, plus one illegal procedure call. That doesn't seem unusually high.

It looked like there was some confusion on two consecutive plays on Costello's goal-to-go situation, resulting in mediocre results. Whether that's on Costello (or someone else's fault), I can't say.
To continue various slices-and-dices... Costello had a 79.3 QBR (adjusted up to a 88.7). Which is pretty good. Chryst's 62.2 before adjustment is mediocre; the 77.1 post-adjustment is pretty solid.

Costello impressed me on two plays in particular where I suspect (hypothetically) that Chryst would have failed.Â
In the first case, the Utah LB blitzed up the middle, perfectly timed, and was in Costellos face right after the snap. Costello bought just enough time by sprinting a couple steps to his right, and then he delivered a catchable ball to the receiver, who dropped it. The other case was when he hit Stewart running a crossing pattern from left to right, just a split-second before getting blasted from the blind side. Stewart ran for a nice gain after the catch. Some may remember that JJ was running open on the same pattern at SDSU when Chryst tried to deliver the ball a bit too late and was strip-sacked from the blind side. It might be an unfair comparison - I didnt measure how much time each of them had before the rush was on them - but the situation sure seemed similar in real-time. Costello produced a nice gain, while Chryst produced a fumble. In both of these cases, Costellos quick decision-making was the key to the play.
I trust the coaching staffs decision either way, but I continue to see one QB that seems to react more quickly and instinctively when things dont go perfectly as planned. The tougher the opponent, the more that ability could matter.Â

I think you are proving my point. Whether we agree with it or not, Chryst was named the starter and he didn't do anything to lose the job. Costello wasn't going to get the same number of series, and although I think he played decently he didn't play as well as he did vs UCLA & ASU so didn't play well enough to merit more series (I think he had one or maybe two in the second half).
I'm not saying it's right or fair. Just reflecting where I think the coaches' heads are.
I'd love to see Costello get more reps because I think he's the better QB but I'd rather see a starter named who takes the snaps until he's hurt or not performing. This offense needs stability.

Costello wasn't going to get the same number of series, and although I think he played decently he didn't play as well as he did vs UCLA & ASU so didn't play well enough to merit more series (I think he had one or maybe two in the second half).
I'm not saying it's right or fair. Just reflecting where I think the coaches' heads are.
