Did anyone catch the Stanford connection in yesterday\'s Boston Marathon?
The top US finisher, Ryan Hall, is a Stanford runner keeping pace with the top Kenyan runners - but not quite beating them. At least not yet. His time in Boston yesterday set an American record and would have placed him first in many previous marathons. In a perfect day for running he set the pace for many miles before dropping to fourth at the finish. (Kenya\'s Geoffrey Mutai finished first with a World Best time, but perhaps not the World record, followed by two African runners and then Hall.)
Hall is sort of a distance running renegade who has tried different techniques throughout his career. Back at Stanford he made news for training with the Kenyan team and eating their diet. (Ugali, yum!) This year he made news again for dropping his coach, moving to Flagstaff and taking over his own training schedule. In the attached article he gently chides US running for not being open to different approaches.
There\'s also a controversey over whether the Boston winning time should be the new world record. Evidently Boston\'s course may not be eligible for the World Record. Who knew?
Good running Ryan!

Mutai\'s time a new world record? Maybe not.
