I prefer small airports. They usually have a small cafe that serves real food. Santa Barbara had a great little restaurant back in the day when we were shooting the oil spill.

The airport is still small but the two eating establishments there now are for certain a move in the wrong direction.

I think that Phogge is referring to the Overlook Cafe at the old Santa Barbara airport, which was upstairs and outside of security. I used to take my son planespotting on the outside patio there, starting when he was three years old. Back then, SBA served 5 or 6 regional airlines plus the private planes and jets. Now, in our spanking new state-of-the-art facility we are down to 3 airlines with minimal decent eats outside of security. Still OK for private-jet watching, however upstairs viewing is through security so you have to watch from the sidewalk outside the terminal.
If there's one thing people have learned in Berkeley, it's that you can't put "Cal football" and "Rose Bowl" in the same sentence. The words just don't fit. You'd be better off linking "covered wagons" with "Mars travel." (Bruce Jenkins, Cal '70, SF Chronicle, Nov. 11, 2017)

Other good eats at airports back in the day were Eugene, Shreveport, Amarillo and Arcata.

Best airport eats are still Tortas Frontera in ORD.
DCA now has some very good food options, though it depends which terminal you're flying out of.
