Incoming freshman and high three-star Rutger Reitmaier is leaving the program; https://www.addictedtoquack.com/2017/7/17/15985614/oregon-freshman-rutger-reitmaier-leaves-the-program

One-time Stanford commit Rex Manu isn't playing in 2017 for medical reasons: https://www.oregonlive.com/ducks/index.ssf/2017/07/lineman_rex_manu_will_not_play.html

Re: Yesterday in opponent attrition: Ducks - Durty Nelly - 07-19-2017

They have a real problem with their DL depth.  For a position group that typically loses players due to injury, they could be very depleted toward the end of the season.  Wish we played them in November rather than October.

Re: Yesterday in opponent attrition: Ducks - JohnR34231 - 07-19-2017

What is the prognosis on the Duck defense this year? Is it supposed to have significantly improved from last (hard to imagine it being much worse)?

Re: Yesterday in opponent attrition: Ducks - Hulk01 - 07-19-2017

Ducks were last year's version of the Colorado defense of 2014: One senior starter, seven of the top 13 tacklers freshmen and sophomores.  Two years later, under Oregon's now-defensive coordinator, the Buffs were an elite group.

Scott Pagano comes over to Oregon as a grad transfer from Clemson, where he contributed to very good DL.  Troy Dye, one of those freshmen, was excellent last year, and Arrion Springs is an excellent D

It's not common for a defense to improve by my 10 points allowed per game from one season to next.  That improvement that would still leave the Ducks with a 30+ ppg game allowed.  But I wouldn't bet against the Ducks allowing around 27, bigger stronger and better coached.  That's not great defense, but it's  good enough to win if teamed with a typical Ducks offense.

Thanks. Yeah, I don't think the Ducks will be down for very long (Phil won't permit it). Of course, Washington will be excellent as long as Petersen is there (which based on his track record will be quite a while). Also, Wazzu under Leach I don't think will be a patsy either. The Pac-12 North will definitely be challenging for us.

Re: Yesterday in opponent attrition: Ducks - ADPATERSON - 07-19-2017

"North challenging":  except for CALSUCKS -- they could really blow in 2017, like Stanford 2006 bad.

U$C gets an easier path thru South.  And they don't play WASH.
Thrashing Troy early, like 2012 and 2015, would vault us into Top Ten.
That means getting to Darnold and forcing turnovers.  Solly's scoop and score in Pac12 Champ game was pivotal.

Re: Yesterday in opponent attrition: Ducks - winflop - 07-19-2017

The North is a three-horse race between us, the Cougs, and UW. Kal, OSU, and OU are all likely to be short of 6 wins overall and likely 3-6 or worse in conference. I think we are the team to beat in the North, followed by Wazzu and then UW.

The South looks more challenging to me. Four of the six coaches have seats hotter than Death Valley in July (RichRod, Graham, Mora, and MacIntyre). I think a couple of them will surprise, and I don't think U$C is that good especially in the trenches.

Oregon fans seem to think they're right back in the North hunt now, but FWIW I'm in agreement with you here especially due to Oregon's departures. Will be fun to watch the Civil War between a young mid-transition fighting-for-relevance-again UO and this-is-the-year-the-rebuild-pays-off (according to them, not me) OSU. I predict it'll be a battle for bowl contention.

Cougs aren't getting enough respect IMO. Falk staying gives them a shot at a real good year.

Naturally, there are lots of unknowns for UW and us, but I certainly don't see UW as #3. I think they will not be as good as they were last year, but that they will still be very strong. We will need to improve significantly to beat them. I think that we WILL improve significantly, but I really can't say we should be the favorite at this point. After the fourt game, maybe! ;D

MacIntyre??? The off-field issues, yes, they matter. But is his seat hot after last year? I can't imagine how. Where does this come from, as I haven't seen it.
Quote: I don't think U$C is that good especially in the trenches.
I agree, I think their lines will be an issue. If we can get by them before they have a chance to "jell", it will certainly help. Also, I am not sure their coaching staff is really up to generating wins in close games. Last year, the players made the plays. This year, possibly not so much, and the coaches will have to do a better job. Can they? We will see.

Re: Yesterday in opponent attrition: Ducks - BostonCard - 07-19-2017

McIntyre just signed a big contract extension.  His seat is not warm.

The action is in the state of Arizona.

FWIW, I have been told that RichRod is already gone, no matter what happens this year. He doesn't want to be there, and the school/fans don't want him to be there. The problem at the end of 2016 was that there was no place for him to go that would pay him as well as he is paid now. So it was all about the money for him. UA also has the problem of who will be willing to replace him? It is not easy to recruit there and it gets harder every year. It could be real hard to find a credible replacement if the ASU job is also open. The RichRod era has all the signs of not ending well.

Not surprisingly, the denizens of the Emerald City might beg to differ with you on whether Stanford is the team to beat in the North.

Not surprising at all. I expect the Nov 10 game to be a great one, but I expect our game at Wazzu will decide who is the King of the North (with all due respect to Ned Stark, Robb Stark & Jon Snow :P )

This seems to be true, although I don't understand it at all. Tucson is a good-sized city with great weather (fall--spring, anyway) and lots of amenities. There are NO pro teams, no academic hurdles and the entire city rallies around the 'Cats. Perhaps the fact they're known as a hoops school could factor in but the notion that recruiting there is difficult doesn't seem valid.

Tucson is great, and the people are great. U of A is also a good school. However, if you are from LA (or anyplace similar) and want an urban setting, it just isn't. (thank goodness in my opinion, but...) Worse still, ASU is currently getting all the state money, period. It is a ginormous school in the most populous city of the state. U of A is perceived (and even more importantly, perceives themselves to some degree) as on a down slope to oblivion. Tucson is "old Arizona", which I actually prefer, but lots of people regard it as a backwater. So far, basketball has been able to get around this, but for how long is not certain. The "one and done" aspect, along with lots of drinking possibilities, make it possible to get 5 basketball players. Football players are looking at 3 years minimum, and you need more of them.
ASU has recruiting issues as well, but they at least have a much larger metropolitan area and a "new" campus to attract students. Also, FWIW, if you are an athlete looking for a place where your "name" will count for something after you graduate, Arizona is just too small for lots of guys. Utah has similar problems, but at least there is only one PAC-12 school in the state.

Re: Yesterday in opponent attrition: Ducks - fullmetal - 07-20-2017

I would also say that Tucson does not have a major airport like ASU has in PHX.  As far as accessibility goes, I really appreciated SJC and SFO being near Stanford (still do!).

I would agree, but the local radio honks feel he is in it to stay, the new AD has been nothing but positive as well. Here are some of the issues for many fans as I am hearing them:
1) RichRod gave his son a full scholarship at QB for next year. His son was not even on most D1 or D2 team's radars. As a current local, I have heard many fans ask "Why did he give his son a scholarship when he gets nearly free tuition as the child of an employee."
2) They have had 2.5 seasons of ridiculous injury problems, but the S&C coach has not been even mentioned as a problem.
3) RR keeps whining that a renovation of the stadium and an indoor practice facility are the main culprits in recruiting. This ignores how many times he has over signed and then asked kids to "blue shirt".
4) The former AD (Greg Byrne, now at Alabama) was adamant in sticking to the academic requirements for student-athletes. RR had a major issue with this.

These are not facts, just the things I have heard from fans, locals, faculty and students over the last few years.

Funnily enough, the local sports talk station increasingly comments on how many fans now refer to Dick Tomey as the best in the school's history, and forget that they ran him out of town at the end of '00 (IIRC).

I have heard that as well. The AD quotes can somewhat be attributed to the idea that he has nobody on standby and that he doesn't want a known lame duck before the start of the season. What is really true, who knows. The radio honks are, I think, mostly "homers". They won't go negative until or unless there is no other option.

Just speculation, but maybe he doesn't expect to be an employee next year. Also, if he gives the scholarship now, it isn't probable his successor would dare to revoke it somehow. It kind of looks more than a bit funny. Also, wasn't there somebody better to give it to, given that his son presumably wanted to go to the U of A in any case?

It seems that RR can't recruit offensive linemen. That has been an issue for the last two years, and doesn't seem to be getting better. Last year, they also had defensive line problems. I am not sure that is an ongoing issue, but U of A has made up for a lack of bulk with some just crazy linebackers. Without that, they struggle on defense as well. I think that also relates to the injury problem. Some of their athletes are just too small for what they are being asked to do. Anu Solomon got off to a good start initially, but just got killed over the years because 1) there was no protection and 2) he was expected to run a lot.

Unfortunately that has been a bit of a pattern at the U of A. A coach starts out well, or at least shows year over year improvement, everyone gets excited, then things just don't work out. Sorry to see it happening again. I really enjoy going to football games in Tucson. The stadium isn't ultramodern, but it is big, and the sight lines are good. It is easy and pretty cheap to get a ticket.

I know it was a long time ago now, but how was RR so successful at West Virginia?

Probably because it was a long time ago. For a few years those spread teams seemed invincible, until people learned how to defend it.
