Stanford 38
S.C. 20
The offense does its job, but the defense contributes to our total, too. McCaffrey runs for 125+ and a score; he catches another 75+ and another score (he clears 300 APY on the day when you include return yardage). Burns is efficient with three TDs--one each to McCaffrey, Schultz, and Irwin, with a lot of yards to Schultz and Irwin across the middle of the field with the defense keying on Christian. We get our fifth TD from the defense, probably on a Meeks pick-six. The halftime margin is anxiety-inducing, just 17-10. But we turn it on in the second half, scoring TDs on our first two possessions and then resorting to predictably conservative play-calling that churns clock but doesn't move the ball all that well, with a late pick-six getting us to our total. The halftime theme is "what's wrong with Stanford's offense??" with the post-game answer being, "oh, nothing."
And even with a 18-point win, we get a continuous drone of "well, Bama beat SC by more, so Stanford isn't really that good" analysis in the media.Â
