GSB dinged me too - twice.  But that's not the same.  I was 25 not 17 and by then had experienced plenty of rejection.  Some of these kids may never have had any significant rejection in their lives before.

+1 The reality of Stanford, as well as many of the Ivies, is that you will meet more people that are rejected by these schools than are admitted.  The thin envelope can make haters out of some people - UCB alums are the best/worst example here.  The bitter bear backers see red given our recent success and Rose Bowl wins (pun intended).    We should all show restraint around the topic of admissions.  Stanford is the toughest university to get into, for the last three years, I believe.  I'm glad the bar is set high for all students - as it should be.  Most of us were very fortunate, but there's no reason to laud it.
