I'm guessing it has to do with the following:
- ND plays 'SC on Thanksgiving (like Stanford does in odd number years), meaning one of the other Pac12 teams either needs to take their bye that week (like C'al a few years back) or play another non-conference game
- Big Game is never played on Thanksgiving week because it would result in low student participation
- So, in even years, Stanford basically has to take a bye, play a non-conference opponent, or another Pac12 opponent. All other Pac12 opponents are playing rivalry games except Stanford, C'al and UCLA. UCLA is playing C'al, so we got the shaft.
To simplify scheduling, the Pac12 requires all non-conference games to be played before October, with the only exception being teams tied to ND. Because we (Stanford and 'SC) are the ones creating the issue, it kind of makes sense we'd be the ones to deal with the results. When Ca'l had to play 12 straight weeks without a bye because Stanford was playing ND on Thanksgiving, I gotta say, they had a pretty reasonable gripe. Losing your bye so your rival can play a showcase game has gotta suck.
