Rice on Thanksgiving? -
cardcrimson - 01-06-2016
Seriously?!? I finally saw the schedule for next year, do we really play Rice on Thanksgiving weekend? I sure this has been discussed before, but who makes this stuff up? The same guy that scheduled most of our games for 10:30 EDT?
I prefer stuffing to be honest. -

I'm guessing it has to do with the following:
- ND plays 'SC on Thanksgiving (like Stanford does in odd number years), meaning one of the other Pac12 teams either needs to take their bye that week (like C'al a few years back) or play another non-conference game
- Big Game is never played on Thanksgiving week because it would result in low student participation
- So, in even years, Stanford basically has to take a bye, play a non-conference opponent, or another Pac12 opponent. All other Pac12 opponents are playing rivalry games except Stanford, C'al and UCLA. UCLA is playing C'al, so we got the shaft.
To simplify scheduling, the Pac12 requires all non-conference games to be played before October, with the only exception being teams tied to ND. Because we (Stanford and 'SC) are the ones creating the issue, it kind of makes sense we'd be the ones to deal with the results. When Ca'l had to play 12 straight weeks without a bye because Stanford was playing ND on Thanksgiving, I gotta say, they had a pretty reasonable gripe. Losing your bye so your rival can play a showcase game has gotta suck.

Sigh, what can you do?Â
I would've loved to swap the Rice and Kansas State games on the schedule, so at least we're finishing up the regular season with a Power 5 team. But yeah, it's not ideal.Â

Originally Rice was the opener, but we needed a 12th opponent and KSU took the opener since Rice was apparently willing to switch to our final game

We always have rice on Thanksgiving. Not just any rice. My mom debones a duck, leaving the entire carcass intact and then stuffs it with sticky rice and delicious stuff. Her signature dish.

It was viewed as an opportunity to highlight the two most innovative college bands in the nation on Thanksgiving. ESPN has requested the right to nationally televise the halftime show only.

It's not Thanksgiving in our family without Uncle Ben's Wild Rice. Has been since 1961. (my mom is an early adapter.) Last year my mom announced she really doesn't care fo it. Dead silence. But why, then, mom, do we have it every year? Because you children enjoy it. Do I have a great mom or what? :)

Not sure what the problem is. Unless we want our bye at the end, we have to play someone, and Rice is no better or worse an opponent than anyone else. If we are in consideration for a playoff, then its an easy game before the Pac-12 championship. If we are not, then it doesn't matter when we play them.
While a high-level opponent like Notre Dame would represent one more chance to impress the committee before a P12 championship if we are "just" on the outside looking in, a loss to a high profile opponent if we were already among the top 4 would be a chance to blow it. Overall, we have a good schedule, with 9 conference games, two power-5 non-conference games and no FCS games, and a conference championship if we win the P12N. We won't be dinged for playing Rice. If we are undefeated or have one loss we should be in the playoff, and if more than 1 power-5 champions have two losses, I think we would compare favorably with most conference champions.

High-five!
Will we get to play Rice in Houston in '17-'18? Could be really nice for all the Texas recruiting efforts...

I attribute this to the Larry Scott hates Stanford conspiracy theory which seems to prove itself over and over each year, and always in a seemingly different way.

They're can't see them, they're just joking about us only playing night games.

If we're highly-ranked that weekend, the game could be picked up in a mid-tier time slot...would be more exposure than Rice has gotten in a long time, I'd surmise.
My remarks about the early time were a throwback to the Northwestern game's starting time and the havoc wreaked on Stanford's biorhythms. At least late November in Houston won't be risking a snow game...
