Back when we were in the old stadium, at the last home game of a season, Stanford was getting ready for the kickoff. A lady stood up several rows in front of me and got the attention of everyone around her. She said her son had been the tee-picker-upper for four years and this was his last game. She pleaded with all of us to give him a big cheer when he picked up the tee. When that kid ran out and grabbed the tee, our little pocket of fans went wild. Other fans were looking at us wondering what had happened and what they had missed. But the tee-picker-upper guy knew. He had his moment of glory. . . .

My only complaint was that you blink and you miss Chryst's pancake block. I was expecting it to get the full slow-mo highlight treatment, but I guess that sideline camera didn't have a good view.

He is extremely capable and adaptable. Watched him tonight and, not only was he perfect on kicking tee pick-ups, twice (not once, mind you) he went out and picked up stray towels that had dropped on the field. Had to be a totally improvised play and he picked the towel up perfectly both times. It is a part of the game I had previously overlooked.Â

As crazy one sided as it looked, UCLA had more total yards then us and an equal number of first downs. From the game stats, you would have never guessed the score. In hindsight, it kind of sucks that they put 35 points on our D. I think our D played very well in the key moments necessary to keep the momentum in our favor. We gave up that easy score on the long pass and the garbage score at the end. Perkins and Rosen are players, no doubt. We were just the more talented and explosive team. C-Mac better get the Pac-12 POW.

At least 14 of those points were in garbage time. Our defense did a pretty good job against a good offense.

The defense played one really good quarter and got a pick-six -- that was enough to put the game way out of distance. But I wouldn't say it's *good*, per se, overall. It's like those Duck defenses of the early part of Chip's run: stop them a little bit, and that's good enough for a dominant offense. (Hopefully. It's perhaps an upset-susceptible formula.)
The question is, will the defense improve? There's some reason for optimism. Justin Reid seems to be overtaking Dallas Lloyd -- I'd guesstimate the snaps were divided 40/60 or 50/50 last night. Hopefully there's youthful upside there. The DBs, in general, should continue to develop; Holder looks excellent at times. And then the return of Noor Davis or Kevin Anderson would provide nicely-sized boosts. In the meantime, the absences are allowing us to develop depth -- Alfieri had probably his best game of his career, and Mike Tyler was active as well.

It does feel like this is an Oregon situation, although I think Oregon was more intentionally risk-taking, playing aggressively knowing that if they screwed up and the other team scored it didn't matter, but if they made a great play then they'd be digging the hole deeper and deeper.

It does feel like this is an Oregon situation, although I think Oregon was more intentionally risk-taking, playing aggressively knowing that if they screwed up and the other team scored it didn't matter, but if they made a great play then they'd be digging the hole deeper and deeper.

Yup, these are high-class problems to discuss, of course. But I'm still a bit cautious about the team for that reason. The defense will need to chip in against N.D. (which looks like the lone complete team on the schedule). Against the rest of the teams on the schedule, I think most have prominent enough strengths that we can't afford a total off game from the offense. And because of that, you want to have diversified strengths. Can the defense bring it and hold a decent offense to, like 10 points and destroy their souls (a la the 2012-14 defenses?) I doubt it. Maybe with some in-season development. Certainly the outlook for next year has some promise.

Yup, these are high-class problems to discuss, of course. But I'm still a bit cautious about the team for that reason. The defense will need to chip in against N.D. This defense certainly isn't holding any competent offense to 10 points. It's possible we see it next week against Washington, but otherwise teams will certainly score on us. If we had last year's defense with this year's offense I wouldn't be afraid going into any game, but sadly the stars didn't quite align for us that well. I still think we'd benefit from a mentality switch on defense, being more aggressive. IIRC we hardly blitz, and since we're not getting a ton of pressure with 4 I'd like to see it more often. But if the offense is going to put up 40+ every game, we can certainly afford to concede a few TDs.

Don't forget Palma was out for more than half the game. And on the drive to end the half where UCLA scored, both Palma and Martinez were out. That's really rough, especially against Perkins. Hopefully Palma is back soon, apparently Shaw was cautiously optimistic in the post game press conference he should be back next week.
