Dan was indeed a good baseball player, but I think football was his calling. #3 pick in the 1971 draft - which, incidentally, was a pretty good draft for QBs with Plunkett, Manning, Pastorini as the first three picks in the draft, then Theismann, Lynn Dickey and Ken Anderson.
He played on the 1968 Goldpanners in the Alaskan league. it was a hitter's league, the team overall batted .320 and Pastorini batted .311. The leading hitter was Stanford's very own future big leaguer Bob Boone who batted .405. Bob was a career .254 hitter in the majors as a very capable catcher, holds the career-games-caught record, I think. Dave Kingman was also on the team, and in a shade of things to come, had 13 at bats, and two hits...a triple and a homer. Jim Barr pitched on that team, and I think there were one or two other Stanford players, maybe Bob Gallagher.
