I know many here aren't Californians and most here don't go back as I do. :). That said what a list Elway, Denise Corlett and the 3 running backs of the 49ers million dollar backfield, late 40s.

What a strange group of nominees. Team of the Century includes 3 centuries. All CIF Team of the Century includes nominees from before CIF existed. No one from prior to 1940 has a chance, and wouldn't surprise me if all winners come from the past 30 years. Iintentionally voted for old nominees.Â

Haven't looked at the list yet but it's gotta be Bob Mathias....no?
And now, having looked at the list, I see no mention of him. I call BS!

Pretty damned good football player, too. A lot better than Pete Rozelle, for instance, who is on the list.
Here's an article about the '51 Stanford-$C game:
http://stanford.scout.com/story/1008370-game-of-the-century-51-stanford-vs-usc
Meanwhile...in the "twas ever thus" category:
"After winning his first Olympic decathlon gold medal at the London Games at the age of
seventeen in 1948, just after graduating from high school, Bob Mathias gained a provisional
acceptance at Stanford University, contingent on his improving his English grades. "

That was a fun read. Some things never change . . . . Thanks for the link.

And how did we both miss NFL #1 pick, Steve Bartkowski of Buchser HS and U.C.B.? Also not on list. Odd.

Seriously, can a HS athlete exceed the standard Bob Mathias set? I mean, winning the Olympic decathalon right out of high school? It's unreal.

With the movie Unbroken out soon I think someone from the 30s might get a vote :)
We beat Craig Morton 48-7. In HS.
I saw Barkowski score 51. Better maybe in Baseball. Certainly in FB

Morton was named Northern California High School Athlete of the Year, and played in the California Shrine game. I remember watching him work out when he was in his mid-30s, he was throwing seeds. Great arm. College nickname was "Hummer."
What high school did you attend?

I agree Zamporini (sp?) should be named. Given the way these things work it would have been more fair to list them oldest to youngest rather than the other way around. Force people to remember.

Speaking of "better maybe in baseball", an anecdote....
I played HS baseball for St. Joe's in Alameda. While we were terrible, I had the chance to play against two future major leaguers from St. Elizabeth's (Bernie Williams and Steve Byre) and a guy who hit the longest home run I ever saw - Dan Pastorini of Bellarmine. I truly believe that he would have been a better big leaguer than an NFL QB.Â
Re: Vote for the greatest CA HS athletes ever -

Dan was indeed a good baseball player, but I think football was his calling. #3 pick in the 1971 draft - which, incidentally, was a pretty good draft for QBs with Plunkett, Manning, Pastorini as the first three picks in the draft, then Theismann, Lynn Dickey and Ken Anderson.
He played on the 1968 Goldpanners in the Alaskan league. it was a hitter's league, the team overall batted .320 and Pastorini batted .311. The leading hitter was Stanford's very own future big leaguer Bob Boone who batted .405. Bob was a career .254 hitter in the majors as a very capable catcher, holds the career-games-caught record, I think. Dave Kingman was also on the team, and in a shade of things to come, had 13 at bats, and two hits...a triple and a homer. Jim Barr pitched on that team, and I think there were one or two other Stanford players, maybe Bob Gallagher.

Bob Mathias averaged over 8 yards per carry in high school and was considered the best fullback on the west coast. He played offense and defense, kicked off, punted, place-kicked, and returned kicks. He averaged 18 points per game in basketball and was All-State. He won state championships in discus, shot put, high hurdles, and low hurdles. And, by the way, he won the Olympic decathlon at age 17.
What does it take to get your name on this ballot?
