For me the motivation was to escape from the snakes and racist rock throwers.  The dearth of racists in our town leaves me in a quandary as to how to motivate Publiette.  The only thing that would work right now is "Get good grades or you will not get to do the Big Game Touchdown Dance when you grow up."

For the benefit of new parents: Dancing to the Stanford band is also great motivation when you're potty training todlers.
