I think Publius is referring to this line: " Childress recalls how his older brother motivated him to get good grades by dangling sneakers as the prize."

I'm always curious to hear how people motivate their children to excel scholastically. Neither of my parents had been to a four year university when I was applying to school (although three of my four grandparents had attended Stanford or kal). My dad always regretted it, but his motivation skills were limited to "get a 4.0" and "go to a good school," which he more or less left undefined.
With my 14 year old sons starting high school, I tried to frame scholastic pursuit and achievement in terms they could understand; e.g., "if you get A's, you'll live in that mansion with that wife, if you get B's you'll live in that house with that wife and if you get C's, you'll live under that bridge with no wife." Seems to have worked.

For the benefit of new parents: Dancing to the Stanford band is also great motivation when you're potty training todlers.

Well, what is the snake situation?
Although......
there are plenty of snakes on Stanford land, as anyone who runs the Dish or hangs out on Jasper Ridge could tell you.

I don't know. Eventually they figure out there are a lot of idiots with mansions and hot wives, and a lot of scholars with neither.

Oh, I absolutely agree that they do. But not at age 14.

Enh, at age 14 they'll notice there are a lot of idiots who are popular and with the good-looking girls (and if they don't, they will soon.)
People will always notice when virtue isn't rewarded; it's just that the rewards change by the circumstance.

The kids from Slytherin were always giving him a bad time.

There are a lot more when we play $C at home.

Apropos of nothing, but Mrs. Mick and I were walking the Dish, and a snake and a squirrel started to argue. The squirrel, by far, got the better of the conflict, a completely unanticipated outcome.

Interesting... my parents offered me nothing in the way of motivation, which was probably smart because them trying to motivate me externally would have at best had no effect, and at worst been counterproductive. I (and I would like to think most Stanford students) was very internally motivated.

Hmm, and a few years ago, they had Draco Malfoy for quarterback. (Apparently, this person agrees with me.

Sirius Black was in Gryffindor, not Slytherin (despite being from a family line of Slytherins). Perhaps you're thinking of Severus Snape?
(I can't remember useful things at all, but random trivia like this gets permanently stuck in my head. Go figure.)

This is why as an athlete you should come to Stanford if you get in.
