What I find most amusing in those BI threads is the belief expressed by many that the game at Santa Clara stadium shouldn't come on a "Ca'l year". I have no doubt that the exact same posters would be expressing outrage if the rumored date of the game was 2015 and that the neutral site game shouldn't happen in a "Stanford year." There's no supportable logic why doing the neutral site game during a "Ca'l year" is less advantageous to Ca'l than doing it in a "Stanford year." Those folks are just reactionary knuckleheads who will wail and gnash teeth no matter was the proposal.
I also get a chuckle every time someone states stadium downsizing as an issue. Ca'l stadium is what, 20% larger than Stanford even though they have 3X the students and alumni? And they downsized several thousand in the latest renovation? Hello pot, meet kettle. You have a lot in common.
As for the idea itself, while I wouldn't like to take the game off of college campuses in general, it's not like this would be the first time. Weren't the first few played in SF? And the opportunity to "balance the schedule" is attractive to season ticket holders (and the AD.) Part of me thinks that it's short sighted to try to manage the long run schedule of games based on current popularity, but there's not reason to believe that N.otre Dame and Oregon won't continue to be big draws, so putting them opposite BG makes sense.
