2014 Big Game to be played in Santa Clara? - 71Bear - 08-23-2013

Evidently S. Barbour is in negotiations with the Niners to move the 2014 Big Game to the 49ers new stadium in Santa Clara....

Just another sign that college football is going down the dumper.........

Re: 2014 Big Game to be played in Santa Clara? - stupac2 - 08-23-2013

As long as it's not one we're hosting.

Although I'm not sure why this is a sign CFB is down in the dumper.

But...but...but... - Redrum - 08-23-2013

Kal has invested  mega-millions in a stadium renovation.  Reportedly sold the naming rights to the field.  Even got new porta-potties.  And now Barbour doesn't want to play the most important game of every year on the Activia Yogurt Field at Kal Memorial Stadium??  Wotta surrender monkey.

Re: 2014 Big Game to be played in Santa Clara? - washingtonismoney - 08-23-2013

Looks like the intention is for the game to change the pattern of games -- 2013 @ Stanford, 2014 @ Santa Clara, 2015 @ Berk -- rather than the number of home/away. Not sure what the rationale is from Barbour's end, but for us it helps balance out the schedule, with even year home games becoming almost if not more appealing than odd.

No! Seriously. Screw that!! - Redrum - 08-23-2013

Screw the B.ears.  Screw Bernard Muir if he agrees to it.  Screw the NFL.  Screw the mushy headed thinking that conjurs up "synergies" and media-genic opportunities.  Why don't we just schedule the University of Phoenix in Dallas if the TV money is good enough?  We could rent out Stanford Stadium for other events on that Saturday and boost our ROI.

Re: 2014 Big Game to be played in Santa Clara? - Leftcoast - 08-24-2013

Take a deeeeeep breath.

Yeah, they'll add it at a jacked up price to our season ticket packet (and probably C.al's as well) but the way i see the schedule, we won't lose a home game and everyone gets a tour of the Niner's new home.  And with all the Stanford love coming from the Niner's these days our C.al rivals will hate this game.

I bet the casual fans enjoy the novelty while the players and recruits love it as well.  It's us alums who have purposefully chosen the college game over the pros who  will hate it.  So repeat after me ... It's only ONE game, It's only ONE game.

Speaking of which, 71Bear, what do the Ca.l fans think of adding a game deep in the South Bay vs having the game at Memorial?  I suspect there are quite a few old blues that are, ahem, seeing red.

Don't mince words, Redrum, how do you really feel about it?

I think it's kind of neat to play an occasional game away from the usual venues, especially when it is in a new, state of the art stadium. Sort of a variety is the spice of life idea. Also, it's not like it's being played in Siberia or anything. Any Bay Area fan won't have to miss it. However, I can tell I'm in the minority here.

This is a great idea.  We will soon be in the majority.

The story behind the story.... - 71Bear - 08-24-2013

So... There is more here than just moving the game to Santa Clara in 2014.  As you guys know, LSJU has wanted to end the arrangement of playing UC and ND at home in the same season for quite some time.  Also, UC has wanted to rebalance it's home slate as well (currently, UC plays UO, UW, UCLA and LSJU at home in even numbered years and, lesser lights, OSU, WSU [and SC] in odd numbered years).

Because (here's the key) UC will host the 2015 game and push LSJU hosting back to 2016, the game in 2014 is truly a neutral site affair with both schools giving up something (hosting in their normal slot) and get something - a rebalanced schedule.

OK.  The guard that watches over sanity in college football may stand down.  There are other bigger fish to fry.........

Yeah, those KILLER Kal home games - Redrum - 08-24-2013

The only thing is,  I've been down this road before with Kal fans and they'd also complain about having to play all those strong teams on the road, too.  For some reason they cling to the idea that they want whatever home field advantage against the strong teams that CMS offers Be.ars these days... and not wanting to see just the weaker teams playing at home.  You can't please Be.ars.  That's why they use 4-ton, locking dumpsters in national parks.

And screw Bernard Muir.

Thanks for the logical answer bear.

I hadn't thought that the same issues plaguing Stanford's home schedule, hit across the bay during the good years.

At least Cal thought to schedule some OOC heavyweights.

though yours is surely a rhetoriCal question, for now, i've read elsewhere that sf's fans who bought santa clara 9r seat licenses were promised they'd keep those seats for any game at Levi stadium.

Re: 2014 Big Game to be played in Santa Clara? - 71Bear - 08-24-2013

Garvin - I suspect they will divide the tix equally - 34000 for each school.  As for the home team issue...  I recommend that both teams be declared the "home team".  Much like the days of yore, both the Cardinal and UC could wear their home jerseys (something I remember seeing in my first Big Game in 1960).

All problems solved.  Let's tee it up.....

Re: 2014 Big Game to be played in Santa Clara? - Extra Point - 08-24-2013

"I suspect they will divide the tix equally - 34000 for each school."

Wikipedia site says that the stadium can be expanded to 75,000 for big events like the super bowl. That would be 37,500 seats for each school.

I think this applies to about 9K "club" tickets in the new 49er stadium

http://levisstadium.com/tickets#/clubs

one of the benefits listed is

"Option to purchase premium parking and tickets to other stadium events"

Re: 2014 Big Game to be played in Santa Clara? - 71Bear - 08-24-2013

Ok.  So we add the seats referenced in EP's post and subtract the seats noted in 82's post.  That leaves us at 33000/school.

A word of warning: Mizzou & KU did this for the last four years they played, traveling to Arrowhead in Kansas City. Chiefs ticketholders got the best seats, all tickets were more expensive than in the schools' respective stadiums, parking was higher and the local businesses in the college towns were super ticked off about the loss of revenue for that weekend. Biggest beneficiary was the Chiefs.

Re: 2014 Big Game to be played in Santa Clara? - Farm93 - 08-24-2013

For years Stanford has tried to find a neutral Big Game site for one year to balance out our schedule cycle better.  UCLA & Notre Dame in one set of years, and USC and UCB in the other.  Moving Notre Dame would be better, but that is a non-starter because they have their desired annual California Thanksgiving balance right now.

I remember that Stanford tried almost everything to get UCB to agree to hold the 100th Big Game at a neutral site in an attempt to accomplish better schedule balance with the unique Big Game.  But, as I recall, UCB rejected that at the time.

So if this is seen as UCB's idea, then great.  Truthfully, if Stanford proposed it, then UCB fans would reject it.  UCB fans might still reject the concept because it is clearly better for Stanford than UCB.  On most fronts it would be better for Stanford on that game day, and definitely a net win for Stanford over the longer term.

If it is a one time deal, it is a big win for the Stanford AD on many levels.  UCB fans have demonstrated that they don't travel beyond BART's reach, so I suspect it will be rather easy to find tickets.  It would finally allow the Stanford AD to address the lumpy season ticket appeal problems and all of the problems that lumpiness has created over the years.

I would be far less excited about a multi-year deal, but even then at least it would be on "our side" of the bay.
