I attended the women's water polo match this past Saturday between then #2 Stanford and then #1 and undefeated USC. It was a high level, high stakes match. Over the past several years, these two teams have clearly been the best in the country. USC handed Stanford its only loss earlier this season. I think there were at least 5 Olympians in the water between the two teams.
Stanford won 6-4 with a stellar defensive effort. USC had scored 13 goals in the earlier win over Stanford. Regardless of the sport, it is always a treat to witness Stanford victories on the USC campus!
We can expect Stanford and USC to match up twice more this season - the MPSF championship next weekend in Berkeley (Stanford will be the top seed) and the NCAA final in Boston two weeks later. The result will probably determine whether or not the consecutive NCAA championship streak continues, although keep an eye on the men's golf team. If they play at a high level, they have the talent to win especially given the odd format of the golf championship which combines stroke and match play.
