Made a nice dessert on top of the main course.
Stanford started a bit slowly against the overmatched Bows, as Hawai'i had success both driving off of and popping out of the pick early in the game. But the defense clamped down, holding the opposition scoreless for 5+ minutes in the middle of the first half, and a 14-13 lead went to 28-13. Never got below 13 again, and the Cardinal got to play everyone extended minutes; other than the two walk-ons, Ebersole and Lakhian, no active player played less than 11 minutes or more than 25. Which should be really helpful against a third game in three days tomorrow, against a Tennessee-Martin team that hung tough with Baylor through the first half of their game today, trailing by only 33-32 until going scoreless for the last few minutes of the first half.
Chiney made up for her relative rebounding issues against Baylor with 17 tonight, including 8 offensive, to go with 15 points. 4 starters in double figures, although the shooting wasn't great - 25-58 against an undersized defense. Picknell had 3 blocks and 8 boards in her first extended action of the year, but is definitely going to have to work on her FT shooting - went 1-4 and has this strange straight over the top of her head form. Also nice energy off the bench as always for Erica Payne.
Hoping WBBFan/WBBFan2 might chime in with a game report. The stream tonight was leaps and bounds better than the Baylor game, but still hard to identify everyone in a webcast (Glenn, I'm blaming that and the KZSU announcer's call for not giving Ruef proper credit for her last play defense on Griner last night :).
Quick turnaround - third game in three nights tomorrow at 7 pm PT. Hope the limited minutes tonight help (as well as UTM having to defend Baylor today).
Now for a couple of more wishes to finish off a darned good weekend - WSoc v Denver tomorrow afternoon, MBB v. Belmont tomorrow evening, and cap it off with WBB. On soccer - Santa Clara got absolutely hosed by the NCAA seeding committee. A team in the top 15 of the RPI for the vast majority of the season is seeded lower than both Denver and Maryland, each of whom would have been a much more appropriate second-round opponent for Stanford (they were both high-20s/low 30s RPI teams). And for our quadrant of the bracket to have all of the best teams on the West Coast really sucks - UCLA, top 4 in the polls most of the season, falling to a 3 seed is one thing. But placing them in a bracket with both Stanford and kal should contravene bracketing principles. And probably would in a more revenue-oriented sport.
