WBB: Stanford 69 Hawaii 42 - 81alum - 11-17-2012

There was always the chance that after an exciting, emotional win we might go flat against a lesser opponent.  That did not seem to happen.  We got everyone into the game and still won relatively easily.

The game was streamed via the University of Hawaii service and was a much better quality than what we were able to see from the Baylor game.

Bonnie seemed much more aggressive with the ball.  Tess got some minutes in, and blocked a couple of shots.

Chiney was a rebounding machine with 17.  Joslyn played well with 16 points.  Erica had a steal and layup.  Amber had 4 assists to 1 turnover and 13 points.

Our three point shooting sagged, though, down to 4/15.  We did out rebound the smaller team 38-28.

A solid game after yesterday's emotional high.

Made a nice dessert on top of the main course.

Stanford started a bit slowly against the overmatched Bows, as Hawai'i had success both driving off of and popping out of the pick early in the game.  But the defense clamped down, holding the opposition scoreless for 5+ minutes in the middle of the first half, and a 14-13 lead went to 28-13.  Never got below 13 again, and the Cardinal got to play everyone extended minutes; other than the two walk-ons, Ebersole and Lakhian, no active player played less than 11 minutes or more than 25.  Which should be really helpful against a third game in three days tomorrow,  against a Tennessee-Martin team that hung tough with Baylor through the first half of their game today, trailing by only 33-32 until going scoreless for the last few minutes of the first half.

Chiney made up for her relative rebounding issues against Baylor with 17 tonight, including 8 offensive, to go with 15 points.  4 starters in double figures, although the shooting wasn't great - 25-58 against an undersized defense.  Picknell had 3 blocks and 8 boards in her first extended action of the year, but is definitely going to have to work on her FT shooting - went 1-4 and has this strange straight over the top of her head form.  Also nice energy off the bench as always for Erica Payne.

Hoping WBBFan/WBBFan2 might chime in with a game report.  The stream tonight was leaps and bounds better than the Baylor game, but still hard to identify everyone in a webcast (Glenn, I'm blaming that and the KZSU announcer's call for not giving Ruef proper credit for her last play defense on Griner last night :).

Quick turnaround - third game in three nights tomorrow at 7 pm PT.  Hope the limited minutes tonight help (as well as UTM having to defend Baylor today).

Now for a couple of more wishes to finish off a darned good weekend - WSoc v Denver tomorrow afternoon, MBB v. Belmont tomorrow evening, and cap it off with WBB.  On soccer - Santa Clara got absolutely hosed by the NCAA seeding committee.  A team in the top 15 of the RPI for the vast majority of the season is seeded lower than both Denver and Maryland, each of whom would have been a much more appropriate second-round opponent for Stanford (they were both high-20s/low 30s RPI teams).  And for our quadrant of the bracket to have all of the best teams on the West Coast really sucks - UCLA, top 4 in the polls most of the season, falling to a 3 seed is one thing.  But placing them in a bracket with both Stanford and kal should contravene bracketing principles.  And probably would in a more revenue-oriented sport.

Hard for me to add anything of significance to what has already been said.  The Bows had heart, and knew how to play, but were hopelessly overmatched.

I'll restrict myself to general impressions.

The whole team is better in nearly every aspect except one: no Nneka.

Taylor is better.  Chiney is better.  Amber is better, and Ruef appears to be back.  I think Tess will be a factor by the end of the year, but her free throw shooting is painful to watch.  Oh, by the way, Tinkle is better.

I think Jasmine is going to become a positive force by the start of the PAC-12 season at the latest.

Our section at Maples referred to Bonnie as the "fawn" mostly because of her gait and partly because she looked to be about twelve years old max.  Well, I think the fawn has become a Doe.  She's played pretty tough these last two games.

There is still the mysterious pass the ball on the perimeter until the shot clock expires lulls, but generally I've liked the ball movement more this year than last.

I really like Erica Payne, but I don't think she will play meaningful minutes in any meaningful game.  I don't see Sara James helping unless she really steps it up.

What I think I've seen thus far is that Toni, Amber and Jasmine will get the lion's share of the minutes at the guard spots.  Taylor and Bonnie will share minutes at the three with Ruef taking some of those away depending on the match ups.  Chiney and Jos will get most of the time at 4 & 5 with Ruef spelling one or the other as the situation demands.  Tess will get more minutes as the season progresses, but it remains to be seen whether Tara will trust her in key spots.

Except for the minor problem of not having Nneka, this is a better team.  I kid.  I'm a kidder.  In all seriousness, the overall improvement of just about everyone and the addition of a healthy Ruef adds up to a final four team, despite the lose of perhaps the greatest player in StAnford's WBB history.

I didn't think so at the start of the season, but I think so now.  I'm not making reservations for New Orleans yet, but i am mentally preparing myself for going.  (Amy and Tara would scold me for getting ahead of myself even that much.)

By the way, people kept congratulating us on Stanford's win over the Ducks when they saw our Stanford gear.  We just thanked them.  Football still seems to be more popular than WBB.  Go figure!
