I think it more likely they keep the 12 game schedule, losing one (or in some cases two) home regular season games won't be popular for the teams that don't make the CFP unless they get a piece of the playoff action.
I think they would more likely keep the 12 game regular season, eliminate the current conference championship games (since winning them would mean much less in a 16 or 32 team playoff), and have a 16 or 32 team playoff. Eliminating the conference championship games also prevents "lesser" teams getting an extra week off before the playoffs
