Holiday Bowls - old spanish trail - 12-23-2023

Man, some of these Holiday Bowls are stinkers. Lots of opt outs to "prepare for the draft" or "enter the portal". Can they be sustained?

I don't see this many being sustained. My logic is stinkers >> lower viewership >> advertising rates drop >> not worth it to hold the game

it would be interesting to see ESPN's P/L for bowl games and compare that to what alternative programming would provide. As long as the participating teams have required ticket purchases and don't push back on that I think a lot of the bowls will survive. Of course if they allowed two extra weeks of practice for all teams and not just bowl teams I could see a lot of teams skipping the bowl games and this would probably be better financially for the schools in most games

Take a closer look. There are more bowl games than ever and big-time college football is flourishing as never, ever, before. And it's also become a bettor's bonanza. Except, of course, for those unfortunates who succumb to gambling addiction. Ain't nuthin' like sports!

Half of the bowls are for Group of 5 teams. ESPN uses less expensive talent and probably gets a sweetheart deal from the hosts of those games. Most of those teams don’t get that much visibility during the regular season and don’t require much of a payout.

ESPN owns 17 of the 41 bowl games, mostly games scheduled prior to Christmas between Group of 5 teams. I’m sure they make a nice profit. Otherwise, they would eliminate the expense by wiping the game off the schedule.

I wouldn't be so sure of that. They own these games. If they aren't played, they become worthless and their value must be written off. That write off may be too much to bear. Disney wouldn't like that at all. If these games break even, or almost so, they can justify keeping them to protect the asset. There are also undoubtedly contractual obligations involved with these games that make abandonment very expensive. Lots of reasons to continue until the real costs clearly exceed the cost of abandonment.

I'm excited to watch Georgia annihilate the whiny babies at FSU today.

They were sympathetic characters until they filed a frivolous lawsuit to leave the conference just because they didn't like how the media contract (that they signed) turned out for them.

Because of all the opt out players, FSU was a 20 point dog in this game. Those opt out players might have blown their chance to play on an undefeated (14-0) team. No loyalty.

Georgia needs a TD and PAT to tie the record for most points scored in an Orange Bowl.....set in 2012 when West Virginia beat Clemson 70-33

they will likely break the current margin of victory record of 55 points...set in 1953 when Alabama beat Syracuse 61-6

Games like the Orange Bowl today will sooner (not later) kill the bowl games. FSU just didn't show up, both literally (the opt-outs) and figuratively. The Ohio St. team that played Missouri also wasn't the team that won all those games in the B1G, but then again, the Notre Dame that played Oregon State was missing some "important" players too. OTOH, Oregon State was missing both players and their coach. The attraction of these games is to see the "best", and when all those players opt-out the audience isn't getting anywhere near the "best" and will opt out too. In no world that I live in will people pay top dollar for these hot messes. It may take a couple of years, but after repeated examples of incompetence due to missing personnel, nobody will watch.

Money doesn't talk, it screams. Turn the schoolboys into full-grown adults: Change NIL agreements to require an athlete's "services" to include bowl games, with sweeteners in the form of bonu$e$ for performance. Problem solved. The bait-and-switch BS must go. I'm paying to see the hotshots, not "the future".
