I am biased in that I think Maul Ball , as practiced by Arizona and Colorado , has to be called within the rules. “Just let them play” becomes an excuse for hack, push and shove . If Colorado and Arizona have good enough athletes to play the defense they play, then fine they should play it, but if what they have are committed players coached to go beyond the rules , they should be called for it.
If Coach Barnes really aspires to have a program like Tara’s she should consider emulating Tara’s approach “ we have to figure out how to play defense without fouling” vs “we were hometowned”. In Barnes defense, Missy Barlow was one of the refs so you know it was not called well.
