I was bummed when Stanford's women's soccer opening match against SCU was canceled (originally scheduled for Feb. 14, as were SCU's matches against USC and UCLA). I was expecting a great match between two tough teams. #11 SCU just beat #2 North Carolina 3-1 in the NCAA semifinal giving SCU their first trip to the NCAA Championship since 2004. It was a virtual home match for the Tar Heels, hosted in Cary, NC. UNC was #1 in goals scored during the season with 48; SCU didn't crack the Top 50 in goals scored with just 26 goals.
SCU (10-1) will play #1 Florida State (13-0-2) in the NCAA championship on Monday, 5/17, on ESPN2. FlaSt won two straight matches on placekicks. Both matches (against Duke and Virginia) were 0-0 in regulation. In the tournament, FlaSt has scored six goals and haven't yet given up a goal. SCU has scored ten goals and given up two.
