#11 Santa Clara just beat #2 UNC and will play #1 FSU for the Championship

WSoc Minor Update - Mick - 05-13-2021

I was bummed when Stanford's women's soccer opening match against SCU was canceled (originally scheduled for Feb. 14, as were SCU's matches against USC and UCLA).  I was expecting a great match between two tough teams.  #11 SCU just beat #2 North Carolina 3-1 in the NCAA semifinal giving SCU their first trip to the NCAA Championship since 2004.  It was a virtual home match for the Tar Heels, hosted in Cary, NC.  UNC was #1 in goals scored during the season with 48; SCU didn't crack the Top 50 in goals scored with just 26 goals.

SCU (10-1) will play #1 Florida State (13-0-2) in the NCAA championship on Monday, 5/17, on ESPN2.  FlaSt won two straight matches on placekicks.  Both matches (against Duke and Virginia) were 0-0 in regulation. In the tournament, FlaSt has scored six goals and haven't yet given up a goal.  SCU has scored ten goals and given up two.

I was so happy to watch Santa Clara eliminate UNC. Especially with their second goal answering UNC's equalizer after just 30 seconds.  

On the other hand, I found myself cheering for UVA over FSU in the first semifinal and PKs couldn't possibly have gone any worse for Virginia. They had a miss followed by two blocked attempts.  And since FSU made their first three kicks, that's all that was necessary to decide the outcome.

Back in the day the CIBA was the best baseball league in the country and Santa Clara a top five team annually. Plenty of SI/SH players on the roster. About time they rebuild their program.

Santa Clara wins it in a PK shootout!  After needing a very late equalizer to force OT.  

Strangely enough, the equalizer came just as the announcers were talking about Stanford leading the Anyone But Stanford Cup standings.  Congrats to the Broncos!

Wow, what a come back.  I turned off the game when Florida State took a 1-0 lead because it looked like one goal would win it.   I'll have to find a rerun of the game and watch the OT.

I only ever watch the College Cup Final and am watching the Men's final now.

Saw most of the Women's final and would say FSU was the better team but Santa Clara hung in there to get the equalizer. FSU pretty well dominated OT, but couldn't score. I hate PKs deciding soccer games, and the announcers were saying FSU had the advantage in PKs because they were 4-0 in them in the tournament.

FSU hit the post and bounced out on their first two shots. They second miss looked like a reply of the first.  SCU never missed, to win 4-1. 

Pretty cool to see two teams from the country with strictest Covid restrictions - and accompanying hardships - win NCAA titles!

Really glad one of my two favorite Santa Clara County / COVID-affected teams won. SCU had failed to advance three placekick finishes in a row. Florida State had advanced four in a row.
