I've only entered twice but strongly agree with your approach.  Getting closest to the actual score is second only in importance to getting the right winner.  Picking Stanford 17-10 is not at all the same as picking us 37-30.  (And calling for a 37-30 score takes some guts--that requires, more likely than not, six field goals by the two teams!  Should be a special clairvoyance/sheer wild luck award for that.)
