It's funny, Stanford fans at the time didn't want to hire Shaughnessey.  The two favorites were SJSU coach Dudley DeGroot of San Jose State (who holds the NFL's Washington club's winning percentage record) and Santa Clara's Buck Shaw (coming off of consecutive Sugar Bowl wins, ultimately becoming the 49ers' coach).  In fact, some thought the hire of Shaughnessey was a prelude to eliminate football at Stanford.

Supposedly Walter Camp used the T-Formation in 1892, prior to the advent of the forward pass, but abandoned it for the single wing and other formations when the forward pass became legal.  Early coaches thought the T formation was a "gadget" offense, though a guy named Halas had Shaughnessey on his staff in the early 1930s.  Halas became a proponent and taught it to Sid Luckman, as did Frank Leahy (4 NCAA championships at ND in the 1940s) and Bud Wilkinson at Oklahoma.  The Bears ended up trouncing Washington 73-0 in the NFL championship.
