Stanford does not have a great recent history of changing a players position. 

I don't think this is really true, in the Harbaugh/Shaw era there have been a number of position switches that have worked out well: Owen Marecic, Erik Lorig, Richard Sherman, Ryan Hewitt, Dallas Lloyd, Kodi Whitfield, Eric Cotton.

Sometimes an unproductive player is switched positions as a desperation move, but when good players are moved due to need, or due to being blocked, those position changes have a good track record.
