A game that was obviously put on the schedule to guard against a post-Tennessee letdown. Poor CSU Bakersfield is only just beginning to build a Division I team and could field only 7 players, most of them 4-5 inches shorter than their Stanford counterparts.Â
This was certainly not a fair fight. Five minutes into the game we were on pace to score about 160 points and they had scored 5. Tara began mass subbing and it became clear that she wanted this game to get a good long look at Josyln, Sara, Erica, Amber, and Bonnie.
My impressions are that Joslyn did fairly well, 8/11 and 20 points with 11 rebounds and 3 blocks--in just 24 minutes. But we have seen her dominate other lesser teams before. Still, she looked good.
Erica Payne looked good to me. She seemed to defend with a lot of hustle, and she was often in position to get offensive rebounds and putbacks. She finished with 12 points on 6-9 shooting, with two blocks and 5 offensive rebounds. Can she do this against taller players? One very interesting development--Tara had her bring the ball up the court a number of times as point guard. Perhaps with all the injuries to guards Tara is experimenting to see who our third healthy point guard could be.
Bonnie looked good to me. She was 2-4 from three point range, but also hit 4 perfect free throws. She has the fastest release of any player I have ever seen. She does the same thing on her free throws--and she was 4/4. She crashed the boards a few times and seemed to defend well.
Amber got a lot of time. The stats say she got no assists and had 2 turnovers, but I thought her passing looked good. She did have 3 steals and it has to be said that she did quite well with her ball handling considering she was up against a team with four speedy guards all as short or shorter than she!
Sara James got a lot of time and had a very rough shooting day-- 2 of 11. Tara knows she is going to need her with two of our guards out for the year, and so even when Sara was cold, Tara would take her out for a minute and send her back. I watched her defense pretty carefully and noted that some of the time she seemed to play well, but on a few occasions she sagged off and left the Bakersfield player open for an uncontested three. That may have been part of a scheme, but it did not look good to my untrained eye.
This was watching a different team than the team that played Tennessee--literally a different team was on the floor most of the afternoon. I enjoyed watching the up and comers.
