WBB Stanford 90 CSU Bakersfield 48 - 81alum - 12-22-2011

A game that was obviously put on the schedule to guard against a post-Tennessee letdown.  Poor CSU Bakersfield is only just beginning to build a Division I team and could field only 7 players, most of them 4-5 inches shorter than their Stanford counterparts.

This was certainly not a fair fight.  Five minutes into the game we were on pace to score about 160 points and they had scored 5.  Tara began mass subbing and it became clear that she wanted this game to get a good long look at Josyln, Sara, Erica, Amber, and Bonnie.

My impressions are that Joslyn did fairly well, 8/11 and 20 points with 11 rebounds and 3 blocks--in just 24 minutes.  But we have seen her dominate other lesser teams before.  Still, she looked good.

Erica Payne looked good to me.  She seemed to defend with a lot of hustle, and she was often in position to get offensive rebounds and putbacks.  She finished with 12 points on 6-9 shooting, with two blocks and 5 offensive rebounds.  Can she do this against taller players?  One very interesting development--Tara had her bring the ball up the court a number of times as point guard.  Perhaps with all the injuries to guards Tara is experimenting to see who our third healthy point guard could be.

Bonnie looked good to me.  She was 2-4 from three point range, but also hit 4 perfect free throws.  She has the fastest release of any player I have ever seen.  She does the same thing on her free throws--and she was 4/4.  She crashed the boards a few times and seemed to defend well.

Amber got a lot of time.  The stats say she got no assists and had 2 turnovers, but I thought her passing looked good.  She did have 3 steals and it has to be said that she did quite well with her ball handling considering she was up against a team with four speedy guards all as short or shorter than she!

Sara James got a lot of time and had a very rough shooting  day-- 2 of 11.  Tara knows she is going to need her with two of our guards out for the year, and so even when Sara was cold, Tara would take her out for a minute and send her back.  I watched her defense pretty carefully and noted that some of the time she seemed to play well, but on a few occasions she sagged off and left the Bakersfield player open for an uncontested three.  That may have been part of a scheme, but it did not look good to my untrained eye.

This was watching a different team than the team that played Tennessee--literally a different team was on the floor most of the afternoon.  I enjoyed watching the up and comers.

Re: WBB Stanford 90 CSU Bakersfield 48 - Yellowlab - 12-22-2011

Nneka came and spoke to us after the game, and was absolutely adorable.  She wanted to get off to a quick start so that the first year players could get some playing time.  One person commented that she seemed to be more demonstrative during the Tennessee came and wondered why.  Nneka said it was an interesting point, because when they were traveling over the summer a few players from the men's team told her she needed to add some swagger to her game.  She said she's trying to be more vocal, and that it really does seem to help.  She said it was infectious!

I thought Sara James played pretty good defensively, but I think she was rushing offensively.  This can change with additional playing time.  Hopefully, the game will slow down for her, because she really can shoot.  She just didn't show it today.  I loved the fact that Erica was playing the point!  I think she may be just a little too short to be an effective post.  When I first saw her I thought she could be a Jillian Harmon type player.  I was that high on her.  I'm still not certain what role she will end up playing, but she is a scrapper.  Tara said that all the players would want her in a fox hole with them.

Bonnie's shot is unique.  She actually put the ball on the floor and hit a pull-up jumper today, which I don't recall having seen before. wbbfan calls her "Dirk," but when she steps to the foul line, I've been calling her "Money."

I would have to say that there was a bit of a difference in the energy level today versus Tuesday night!

Thanks for reporting on the postgame. After yelling myself hoarse at the Tennessee game, I came down with the flu and had to watch this one from my couch on the web site. It was fun to watch the subs get a chance to shine.

In its own way, this game was a lot of fun.  It was great to see the young players (and Jos!) get so much time.  I thought Bonnie showed us some new moves and muscled her way under the basket a couple of times for an inside shot.  It was just great to get to see Nneka afterward and the fans gave her a very warm reception.  In talking about her development as a leader on the team, Amy said that now whenever one of the four coaches tells the team something, Nneka immediately speaks up to say "What Tara means is..." or "What Amy's saying is..."  As if the coaches need a translator.  She said it's like having an unpaid assistant coach.  Nneka had a lot of praise for the training program Susan Borchardt has put them through.  She said now she felt like she could really move.
