Checking in partway through the weekly Pac-12 slate, we have the following results:
Stanford 62, Rice 7 (Stanford was favored by 31)
Colorado State 58, Oregon State 27 (the Beavs were only a 3.5-point dog)
Utah 37, North Dakota 16 (no line; FCS opponent)
Arizona State 37, New Mexico State 31 (ASU was favored by 23.5)
Yes, the Pac-12 is 3-1, with the one loss coming from a team we expected to be wet garbage, but that's a pretty disappointing opening act for the conference. I suppose we should reserve judgment on Utah, since that's basically the scoreline I expected us to put up against Rice, so Whittingham likely didn't ask his OC to pull out all the stops in their revamped offense. But I expect that, had there been a line on the game, Utah would have failed to cover the spread (Utah would have been more than a 21-point favorite at home vs. a FCS foe, I'd think). Â
In any event, the opening "week" marches on, with both participants in last year's Pac-12 title game going tonight: Washington a heavy favorite against Rutgers (UW opened as a 33-point favorite, though the line has moved down to -27.5), and Colorado a minor favorite against Colorado State (the line opened at -8, but has moved down to -3.5 after what CSU did to Oregon State). I'd expect both teams to win, and both to cover, which would put the opening week in a different light, given that the remaining games (aside from C.al-UNC) should see the Pac-12 team emerge victorious.Â
