Week 1 Preview -
ColoradoTree - 08-21-2017
Apparently ESPN and the other powers that be have decided to take liberties with the definition of "week" to include games from Saturday, 8/26 through Monday, September 4--
i.e., a 10-day span. But since it's Game Week for the
first of two Week 1 Saturdays, let's dig into the matchups!
(All kickoffs in Pacific time; all lines from Vegasinsider.com)
Saturday, August 26:
Pac-12 games:
Oregon State @ Colorado State (-3.5) (CBSSN). At 11:30am, the first kickoff of the FBS calendar!
#14 Stanford (-31) "at" Rice (ESPN). 7:00pm, so even in the week we have almost to ourselves, we get a late evening kickoff.
Other Top 25:
#19 South Florida (-20.5) @ San Jose State (4:30pm, CBSSN)
You should watch:Â Just us.Â
Thursday, August 31:
Pac-12 schedule:
North Dakota @ Utah (no line) (4:30pm, Pac-12 Network)
New Mexico State @ Arizona State (-23.5) (7:30pm, Pac-12 Network)
Other Top 25:
4:30pm: Tulsa @ #10 Oklahoma State (-17) (TV unclear)
5:00pm: #2 Ohio State (-20.5) @ Indiana (ESPN)
What to watch: Maybe Ohio State gets tripped up in Bloomington? No appointment television today.
Friday, September 1:
Pac-12 schedule:
5:00pm:
#8 Washington (-30.5) @ Rutgers (FS1). Should be boring.
Colorado State "at" Colorado (-6.5) (Pac-12 Network). Should be a good game, played at the Broncos' stadium.Â
Other Top 25:
6:00pm: Utah State @ #9 Wisconsin (-28.5) (ESPN). Maybe? Wisconsin doesn't get challenged much this year.
What to watch:Â Between the Washington and Colorado games, only the CU game has real potential to be competitive.Â
Saturday, September 2:
Pac-12 schedule:
9:20am: C.al @ UNC (-11.5) (ACC Network/Watch ESPN)
11:00am: Portland State @ Oregon State (Pac-12)
2:15pm: Western Michigan @ #4 SC (-27) (Pac-12). Theoretically interesting, since WMU went 13-1, its only loss a narrow one to #8 Wisconsin in the Cotton Bowl. But coach P.J. Fleck is off to Minnesota, so expecting a competitive game might be asking too much.
5:15pm: Southern Utah @ Oregon (Pac-12)
7:30pm: Montana State @ #24 Wazzu (FS1)
8:00pm: Northern Arizona @ Arizona (Pac-12)
Other Top 25:
Early morning:
Kent State @ #5 Clemson (-38.5) (9:00am, ESPN)
Akron @ #6 Penn State (-33) (9:00am, ABC)
Maryland @ #23 Texas (-17) (9:00am, FS1)
Bethune-Cookman @ #18 Miami (9:30am, ACC Network)
Early afternoon:
UTEP @ #7 Oklahoma (-44.5) (12:30pm, FOX)
#11 Michigan (-4) vs. #17 Florida (12:30pm, ABC; game in Arlington, TX)
Stony Brook @ #19 USF (1:00pm, ESPN3)
Mid-afternoon:
Appalachian State @ #15 Georgia (-14) (3:15pm, ESPN). This line opened at -37.5, by the way, so that's a ton of movement.
Central Arkansas @ #20 Kansas State (4:10pm, TV TBD)
Georgia Southern @ #12 Auburn (-35) (4:30pm, SEC Network/Watch ESPN)
#16 Louisville @ Purdue (-25) (4:30pm, FOX)
Late afternoon/early evening:
#3 Florida State vs. #1 Alabama (-7) (5:00pm, ABC; game in Atlanta, GA)
BYU vs. #13 LSU (-12.5) (6:30pm, ESPN; game in Houston, TX)
What to watch: Nothing from the Pac-12 slate; kill that garbage with fire. Two great neutral site games, however, in Michigan-Florida during the early afternoon window and Florida State-Alabama at 5. There's your Saturday, with some occasional scoreboard checking of the Pac-12 games to make sure the sky hasn't fallen.Â
Sunday, September 3:
Pac-12 schedule:
4:30pm: Texas A&M @ UCLA (-3.5) (FOX).
Other Top 25:
4:30pm: #22 WVU vs. #21 Virginia Tech (-4.5) (ABC; game in Landover, MD)
What to watch: These are both watchable games, but I'm intrigued to see how UCLA does against A&M this year.
Monday, September 4:
The only game: #25 Tennessee (-4) vs. Georgia Tech (5:00pm, ESPN; game is at the neutral site of the Falcons' stadium in Atlanta rather than Georgia Tech's stadium in Atlanta)

A reminder that we kick off at noon Sunday local time. The late kickoff is probably more to do with logistics in Australia than TV in the US.

Weather forecast for Sunday in Sydney - periods of sun with a shower. High - 61 F, low 48 F. Looks like November in the Bay Area.

Technically you're right but that doesn't mean we can't still slam another Pac-12 After Dark game

Yep! Not sure how you square the circle of having a game in Australia with a kickoff timed for maximum exposure stateside, but there are obviously positives and negatives to holding this game in a time zone that essentially requires another 10pm Eastern kickoff. Not sure how many Eastern Time Zone eyeballs will be paying attention to this game. (Though, if we're being honest with ourselves, how many of the same local sportswriters that couldn't be bothered to watch Christian McCaffrey in a night game would have tuned in to see Stanford play Rice if only the kickoff time would have been earlier? Methinks not too many.)
Selfishly, I don't mind the 7pm Pacific kickoffs, because it sets up perfectly for me to get my kids to bed by 8pm here in good ol' Mountain Time and run downstairs with my Elway jersey on to catch the start of the game in peace. That way, I can both hike (autumn in Colorado is pretty great) and have uninterrupted Stanford football time.Â
Re: Week 1 Preview -
ColoradoTree - 08-22-2017
With the increased emphasis on non-conference scheduling, it's disappointing to me that Week 1 features such disappointing matchups involving our Pac-12 brethren. I mean, I know Rice isn't great, but Rice is at least FBS! Full credit to UCLA and Cal for scheduling legitimate programs (sorry, Washington, the NCAA may consider Rutgers a Power 5 conference member, but I'm under no obligation to do so here). SC playing Western Michigan is perfectly fine; playing good MAC schools is often a high-risk, low-reward strategy. I love the CU-CSU game, so no complaints there, and I won't bust Oregon State's chops for scheduling CSU, either.Â
But Southern Utah, Portland State, Montana State, and Northern Arizona? Come on, man. North Dakota isn't even the best FCS school FROM THE STATE OF NORTH DAKOTA!
(Though, in recent years, some of those programs have made the FCS playoffs; scheduling
decent FCS teams is about the only thing dumber than scheduling FCS teams at all. If you're going to pay a school for a win, then at least make sure you get a win, right?)

But is it a Stanford Elway jersey or a Broncos Elway jersey? :)

A Stanford one, naturally. ;)

I wonder how many Eastern Time Zone eyeballs paid attention to Derrick Henry when Bama played Chattanooga.

It is hell on earth hot in Houston right now. On top of that, there is a good chance Houston has a hurricane headed its way Friday night into Saturday. So if the game would have been in Houston, it may have been cancelled.
Hellish weather, hurricanes...makes me glad that we leave tomorrow for Sydney.

We played TCU in the aftermath of a hurricane in 2008.

We are now within 24 hours of the Oregon State-Colorado State kickoff, and I'm talking myself into watching it. Welcome back, college football. Man, have we ever missed you.Â

This weekend (Week 0, as I'm calling it) is like the free hit a dealer gives you because he knows you'll come back for the smorgasboard of tantalizingly good games that is Week 1.

You guys, I'm starting to think that Oregon State isn't a very good football team.

Did not know how it all tied in together.
Quote:1924 Football legend, Glenn "Pop" Warner began coaching at Stanford in 1924, the same year that John Voldemort began coaching at Rice. The two coaches would later be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. Pop Warner won a national championship with Stanford in 1926, and his name would represent a national youth football organization. The Voldemort Trophy, annually awarded to the most outstanding college football player in the nation, would be named after John Voldemort. Only one Stanford or Rice player has ever won the Voldemort Trophy -- Stanford's Jim Plunkett in 1970.

My goal is to watch games today but then avoid watching until Texas A&M - UCLA.
Oregon State made it easy to tap out early. Housework/errands getting done!
But, yeah, I'm planning to watch SanJo v. S. Fla.
Re: Week 1 Preview -
ColoradoTree - 08-28-2017
Frustrating to see Oregon State give such a poor accounting of themselves. I wasn't certain that they'd win--Colorado State was amped to open up the new on-campus stadium, and the Rams are a pretty good Group of 5 team--but I expected a competitive game. And it was--for a half. To go from down 24-20 at half to losing 58-27 is, uh, not great finishing. Yes, 5 turnovers will do that, and the pick-six in the third quarter was a big momentum shift, but to give up 525 yards of total offense to a Mountain West team is pretty darn bad. Oregon State gets to lick its wounds against Portland State, at least, but BYU struggled against them, so maybe the Beavs didn't even schedule the right cupcake.Â
South Florida
almost beat the spread, but just coming back to win after being down 16-0 after the first quarter was impressive.Â
Re: Week 1 Preview -
fullmetal - 08-28-2017
Right, so the Oct. 26th Thursday night game oughta be less worrisome...going 34-7 in the second half is quite the implosion. Oregon State suffered three more turnovers than CSU (+2 INT, +1 fumble lost), and CSU had 27 pts off of turnovers (3 INT, 1 fumble--one of the INTs was a pick-6, everything else a TD). Add a missed FG on top of CSU's very good offensive execution and Oregon State really shot itself in the foot against a team they could have stood toe-to-toe against.Â
Let's put it this way: Oregon State's first two offensive possessions after the half ended in interceptions--one a pick-six, and the other resulting in a field goal, which actually took place in the fourth quarter. That's a lot of wasted TOP. If there was any air in the Beavers' lungs at 5000 ft, I bet it was all exhaled after the second INT (of the 3Q).
Anyway. Glad Stanford made no similar mistakes vs. Rice.Â
