No, it is not random.  We play all 5 schools in the North every year.  We play USC and UCLA every year.  We then play 2 of the four remaining teams (Utah/Colorado, Arizona/ASU).  We rotate the schedule every two years so that we can play a home-and-home with each.  Thus, in 2016, we played at home against Colorado and at UofA, when the year before we played at Colorado and at home against Arizona.  For 2017, UofA and CU rotate off, and we get Utah (on the road) and ASU (at home).  For 2018, we will host Utah and play at ASU, and then the rotation starts anew.
