I agree.  Then there is also the fact that the Big12 is still not a stable conference.  Other outlets are looking at whether the BigTen and SEC are looking to poach more teams from the Big12.  Right now, that conference looks like the old Big East, not exactly moored on a solid foundation.  The Pac-12 may not have the richest contract, but it is stable.  The schools (mostly) get along.  There are academic benefits to being in the Pac-12.
