Strictly on the grounds of whether UCLA football would benefit from such a move (i.e. get more money), it's not a stupid line of thought.

Of course, what makes it stupid is that athletic conferences are about a lot of sports, not just football. There would be a lot of opposition in Westwood, much of it based on concerns about non-revenue sports. And, as we all know, UCLA has great reason to be proud of its teams and athletes who compete in such sports. Messing with that would not be a popular move.

We are not quite yet at the point of schools banding together solely as football-only bargaining units. Maybe next year. (And if then, cash-strapped Kal would be the school to actually consider such a move.)

I really didn't like Neuheisel at Colorado, UW or UCLA, but I must say that I very much enjoyed him on the Pac 12 network.

Agree, Neuheisel was both enjoyable and insightful with the Pac-12 network.

And it's unclear whether he's proposing it seriously or just tossing out the idea. He's got a point -- UCLA, like all college programs, has shown that money is an important driver for its decisions. Maybe that's as it should be. But it shows an important flaw with letting money and the market be the most important or sole decision-maker in an institution. The point of UCLA athletics isn't to make money; it's to beat SC. To win the Pac-12. That's why generations of fans are Bruins.

Speaking as a Stanford fan, I don't want to see a college sports world of Stanford's that doesn't revolve around beating and crushing those guys in the east bay or south central. That's the point, and that's why I signed up.

I agree.  Then there is also the fact that the Big12 is still not a stable conference.  Other outlets are looking at whether the BigTen and SEC are looking to poach more teams from the Big12.  Right now, that conference looks like the old Big East, not exactly moored on a solid foundation.  The Pac-12 may not have the richest contract, but it is stable.  The schools (mostly) get along.  There are academic benefits to being in the Pac-12.

UCLA gets to be a bigger fish in a smaller pond in the Big 12.  They instantly contend, and they no longer have to play second fiddle in the south division.  Also, their recruiting footprint into Texas would increase a lot.

From the Neuheisel quotation, he seemed to be primarily referring to UCLA getting out from under the USC shadow the way that A&M feels they got out of the UT shadow by jumping to the SEC. In some ways that may be true, but UCLA seems far more tied to it's conference relationships than did A&M and jumping to the SEC is a far different financial and status proposition than heading to the Big 12.

The article goes on to speculate about both LA schools hopping to the Big 12, and makes the case by making up a lot of financial assertions out of thin air. It's certainly true that the LA schools have a lot of market clout by carrying along Los Angeles, but not clear that value is inherently higher in the Big 12; or that the rest of the Big 12 adds more value than the rest of the Pac 12.

Maybe it would have taken giving Texas a bigger slice of the pie for a few years for them to make the jump to the Pac, but it would have been well worth it.  The Big 12 is a giant pain in the Pac-12's ass right now.  The Pac whatever leadership should have been able to foresee this and taken very bold action to kill it when it was possible, unless of course, the Pac is OK with generating far less revenue than the other schools in other conferences.

I would think that UCLA and Rosen - Redrum - 07-21-2016

...would automatically top Texas' claim to be the big dog in the Big 12.

The whole problem with all of this speculation is the Longhorn Network, which Texas will hang onto with its cold, dying fingers. Until the LHN disappears, I think the Big 12 is screwed.

Well, why the hell not?  Maryland is now Big 10 Country; so UCLA and West Virginia as conference mates makes complete sense.

Fewer contenders in the Big 12 (as far as winning a conference 'ship is concerned).  OU is it right now. Texas is still an x-factor, Baylor has fallen from grace, I would think.  UCLA has to deal with Stanford, Oregon, maybe Washington, definitely U$C/ASU to win their division, not to mention the conference.
