If they land Kaepernick, which it seems like they're going to do, then perhaps Hogan in a later round would make sense as a backup. The only current QB on the Denver roster is last year's 7th round pick, Trevor Siemian from Northwestern, and it's unclear how much Denver believes in him. I would think Denver would want to pick up a unremarkable-yet-solid Drew Stanton-like vet as a backup for Kaepernick, rather than having a rookie like Hogan and a second-year guy backing up Kaepernick, but if they like Hogan (or a different QB available at the end of, say, the 5th round) better than they like Siemian, it's probably a good pick. But like stupac2, I don't see Hogan playing next year, barring a couple of injuries ahead of him. (I do think he'll make a roster, though. A lot to like in a developmental QB.)
As to whether the Broncos are screwed, I'd suggest that they didn't exactly get good QB play out of Peyton Manning this year and rode a strong defense to a Super Bowl. Osweiler probably could have kept the wheels from falling off, since he did reasonably well in relief (including the win over New England that gave Denver the tiebreaker), but I can certainly see why Elway would shy away from giving a fairly unproven guy a massive contract. Sounds like Osweiler wanted out regardless (he was unhappy about being benched for Peyton late in the season when Peyton was healthy again, it seems), unless the money from Denver beat out every other offer.Â
Kaepernick isn't great, but with a fresh start, he could possibly be a league-average QB. Given Denver's defense (even with the losses of Malik Jackson and Danny Trevathan), I think a league-average QB is enough to get Denver the AFC West, and then who knows from there.Â
But to your point about Hogan not ready to be a NFL QB right now, you're absolutely right. His strengths (leadership, intangibles, decision-making) would tend to better reveal themselves after a year or two in a system while he masters the playbook.Â
In general, I'm not sold on the quality of this QB draft class, though some of that is probably watching Goff the last few years. If Goff is one of the top few guys, then I'm inclined to doubt the capabilities of the guys ranked around him, like Wentz and Lynch.
