What does Elway think of Hogan? -
JJJ - 03-10-2016
Just getting caught up with the headlines. It looks like Denver needs a couple of QBs. What do Elway/Kubiak think of Hogan? Anyone know? Yeah, I have too much time on my hands... 8)

The Broncos are screwed. Maybe they find a gem like Wilson in a later round, but it's so unlikely. I like Hogan, but does anyone think he's ready to be an NFL QB? Maybe, maybe in a situation like Denver where it's a similar-ish scheme (Stanford runs zone runs, right?) and he could let the defense do the work while playing "don't ***** it up", but I still think his best path requires sitting for a few years. I guess we'll see, but I'd be surprised if Denver picks up Hogan.

Could it work for Hogan to go to Denver to back up Colin Kaepernick? Sure sounds around here as if Kaep is going to the Broncos.

If they land Kaepernick, which it seems like they're going to do, then perhaps Hogan in a later round would make sense as a backup. The only current QB on the Denver roster is last year's 7th round pick, Trevor Siemian from Northwestern, and it's unclear how much Denver believes in him. I would think Denver would want to pick up a unremarkable-yet-solid Drew Stanton-like vet as a backup for Kaepernick, rather than having a rookie like Hogan and a second-year guy backing up Kaepernick, but if they like Hogan (or a different QB available at the end of, say, the 5th round) better than they like Siemian, it's probably a good pick. But like stupac2, I don't see Hogan playing next year, barring a couple of injuries ahead of him. (I do think he'll make a roster, though. A lot to like in a developmental QB.)
As to whether the Broncos are screwed, I'd suggest that they didn't exactly get good QB play out of Peyton Manning this year and rode a strong defense to a Super Bowl. Osweiler probably could have kept the wheels from falling off, since he did reasonably well in relief (including the win over New England that gave Denver the tiebreaker), but I can certainly see why Elway would shy away from giving a fairly unproven guy a massive contract. Sounds like Osweiler wanted out regardless (he was unhappy about being benched for Peyton late in the season when Peyton was healthy again, it seems), unless the money from Denver beat out every other offer.Â
Kaepernick isn't great, but with a fresh start, he could possibly be a league-average QB. Given Denver's defense (even with the losses of Malik Jackson and Danny Trevathan), I think a league-average QB is enough to get Denver the AFC West, and then who knows from there.Â
But to your point about Hogan not ready to be a NFL QB right now, you're absolutely right. His strengths (leadership, intangibles, decision-making) would tend to better reveal themselves after a year or two in a system while he masters the playbook.Â
In general, I'm not sold on the quality of this QB draft class, though some of that is probably watching Goff the last few years. If Goff is one of the top few guys, then I'm inclined to doubt the capabilities of the guys ranked around him, like Wentz and Lynch.

RG3 is out there, and Hogan to back him up wouldn't be the worst combo in the world.

Is it really sounding like Kaepernick is going to the Broncos? I really wanted to see what Kelly could do with him... They don't really think Gabbert is the future, do they?
Man, glad I'm not a niners fan.

At least in Denver, it sounds like that, and national folks have reported that (1) he's the Broncos' first choice, (2) SF wants a 2nd round pick for him, (3) Denver might be willing to give up a 3rd rounder, but no higher than that, and (4) Kaepernick would be willing to restructure his deal to accommodate Denver's wishes. (Probably useful to keep in mind that Denver picks last in each round, making its 3rd rounder the least valuable 3rd rounder, not counting compensatory picks.) Apparently the Browns and Jets have asked about Kaepernick, too, so that might drive up the price a bit. Saw a report that Kaepernick prefers the Jets as a landing spot, but that was before the Denver situation opened up, so that's probably no longer relevant given the report that he'd be willing to restructure his deal if he ended up in Denver. I think we can agree that from his perspective, going to Denver (with Thomas and Sanders at WR and with the bulk of that defense returning) is a much more appealing option right now than going to the Jets or Browns.
As for his future in SF, benching him in favor of Blaine Gabbert seemed like a sign he was done there. Kelly coaching him would have been interesting, that's for sure, and I frankly thought that hiring Kelly was a sign SF was going to
stick with Kaepernick. And of course, listening to offers doesn't mean they'll deal him, but if they plan on keeping Kaepernick, they're certainly going about it in a strange way.
And at the risk of veering even further off topic (though it's at least related to Denver's pursuit of Kaepernick), I still can't believe Osweiler just got a $72M deal, with a whopping
$37 million real American dollars of that guaranteed. I get that QBs come at a premium price, but goodness, this feels like Matt Flynn all over again (though even the Flynn deal was for just 3 years and $20M, $9M of it guaranteed--just 4 years ago, though). Osweiler now averages more per year than Matt Stafford and the same as Tony Romo. Osweiler's 51.4% guaranteed percentage (though behind the fully guaranteed deals for recent top picks Blake Bortles, Marcus Mariota, Jameis Winston, and our own Andrew Luck, or the fully guaranteed one-year deal Kirk Cousins just signed) is better than Aaron Rodgers, Eli Manning, Cam Newton, Drew Brees, Matt Ryan, Ben Roethlisberger, Russell Wilson, and other guys that have actually started lots of games in the NFL. Viewed from another angle, his $9.25M average guaranteed salary per year ranks 8th in the league. Man, if he busts, that's an expensive mistake.Â

As far as I'm concerned, we're not veering off topic that much. I was thinking Denver could use someone ASAP and maybe a QB for the future in the draft. Thus my original question re. Hogan, but as everyone astutely observes, that may depend on who the ASAP man is. And no way Elway pays that much for Osweiler... Thanks for sharing your insights!Â

And of course, now there are reports that SF will deal Kaepernick to the Browns, when similar reports last night had the Denver trade as a done deal, with Kaepernick just ironing out details on a restructure. The NFL silly season is in full force. So much deliberate misinformation fed to reporters by teams to try and help the teams' negotiating positions with players.
