There are some similarities, in the sense that Torrey Pines produces very high achieving students, like Paly, and a fair share go on to elite universities. My year, I think there were seven of us who went to Stanford. On the other hand, we are talking about a place in San Diego, and TPHS strikes me as having been fairly laid back compared to Paly. Now, to be fair, I was there for 18 months in 1992-93; things everywhere have gotten a lot crazier since then. And because I was an outsider, I more or less did my thing, and didn't really know the culture there. That being said, based on my wife's descriptions of Paly (she is a grad), I would say Torrey Pines is probably a fair bit more chill.
