I'm sure there were lots of reasons to keep them out. Not playing on Sundays, being anti-intellectual in areas that conflict with church doctrine, being a public lighting rod in general, lower academic prestige than some schools. But from an athletic standpoint, it would have been fun. I'm sure Utah's got great credentials academically and perhaps the Pac12 academics would prefer to have closer ties to them than the BYU folks, but I've known a lot of BYU folks who are high achievers and bright, though again, they can often be anti-intellectual.
It's in the past. I just look forward to a future Pac16 with the original Pac8 making up the western division.
