the numbers teejers threw out are sums of individual game results - these are explicitly not averages, which are what most statistics compute. Below are some relevant average statistics for what you asked. These are obviously not relevant if you don't care about averages.
Points per drive:
2015: 0.55Â (66th - but only games vs FBS count, so few teams in list)
2014: 2.22Â (53rd out of 128)
2013: 2.73Â (27th)
2012: 2.02Â (73rd)
Defensive points per drive:
2015: 1.45Â (27th)
2014: 1.47Â (9th)
2013: 1.57Â (14th)
2012: 1.41Â (12th)

2012: 5.53Â (71st)

2014: 0.150Â (44th)

2012: 0.190Â (34th)
FEI Defense:

p.s. No, I don't have an intuitive feel for the raw numbers of the advanced stats listed, but the differences year on year seem like they may shed some light.
p.p.s. As far as I can tell there is nobody writing that the offense is better than the defense, is good, or is good enough. There are differences over tone, in trying to diagnose what is wrong with the offense, and in what to do going forward (which presumably is related to the former).
