While I ... like totally agree with Buddha on the overall tone of things here just lately, I guess I like totally disagree with Hulk on responsibilities of the head coach.
One way or another, the head coach is responsible for every single thing about a college football team. Among those things, he has to motivate and prepare the team. If some players aren't motivatable*, then he has to recruit players that are.
So, while that means that Shaw ultimately is responsible for the disaster last Saturday, he is also responsible for 42-13 over the past 4+ years ... and for that matter partially responsible for 29-21 the previous four.

Heck, who cares what they disagree with, get them to post here anyways.
We have a couple, yes?

Football isn't your passion, and you'll never be worth a damn at it.
I think you (and many) confuse what it means to be emotionally prepared to play. It doesn't mean being passionate, or being amped up. In fact, too much of either of those can be detrimental and lead to more mistakes than progress. Emotionally prepared to play isn't really much different than simply being prepared to play. It does include being amped up to the right level - whatever that is for the individual.
It would appear that in some sense the team wasn't properly prepared to play for the Northwestern game - though the particular pop-psychological analysis of the players by what people could see on TV seems equally foolish as the pop-psychological analysis of the coaches.

* I justify "motivatable" but the right to make up new words if it's just a message board, the word seems to fit, and follows some set of rules of English. I believe that is in the constitution somewhere - look it up.
