WBB the new offense

Don't usually read womens hoops articles, but need a diversion from the less than thrilling football season for the local teams and the Giants throwing up all over themselves tonight...
Very well-done and interesting read. Thanks for posting the link. I sincerely hope David Shaw has the fortitude to try new approaches and open his mind to new ideas like Tara V. has.

Superb story. I love Tara's personality showing through:
And then her summary:
I'm not sure how we will do this year. Perhaps this will be an off year--hard to know what to expect. But it is going to be a very interesting year and the games should be very entertaining. And knowing Tara, we will wind up doing much better in March than in December.
Quote:"It makes me cranky sometimes," VanDerveer said. "It's a little stressful. You lose your all-time leading scorer and rebounder, your offense gets put in a handbag and goes to hell, and you've got a lot of freshmen you're counting on. I'm glad I have a long-term contract."
And then her summary:
Quote:"Our offense will be more oriented toward the guards. We will push in transition and go, and our bigs will run the floor. It's more get-it-and-go and share the ball."

well stated 81. should be a year of significant progress from Nov-Mar. Interesting that Kailee isn't mentioned in the article -- hope she is healthy! She showed signs of sparkle when healthy early last season.
Two women's basketball rankings came out today:
Pre-Season AP Poll:
Stanford at #6 and three other Pac-12 teams ranked: #15 California, #20 Oregon State and #23 UCLA
Top 5:
1. Connecticut
2. South Carolina
3. N.D.
4. Tennessee
5. Texas A&M
ESPN released its top 20 recruiting class rankings for the Class of 2015 and we weren't on the list (2 Pac-12 teams were: UCLA at #9 and California at #17).
Top 5:
1. Louisville
2. Connecticut
3. Duke
4. Texas
5. N.D.

That's interesting, since the preseason Pac-12 media poll (as reported by the Merc News) has C.al winning the Pac-12 and Stanford coming in second. But C.al isn't ranked in the top ten by ESPN. I guess that could be considered a testament to the (lack of) worth of preseason prognostications...

The recruiting rankings are off because ESPN doesn't have Smith in its database. She's the star of the class.Â
When I registered here in 2014, TrumpCard seemed like an apolitical user ID...

Hopefully they will soon, since they included other international players on the list. It would be good to see how that would change our standing.

Angela Salvadores was not on the list until she was recruited, then she popped in at #5 overall. I do hope they add Alanna Smith soon. Will be interesting to see where they put her. Salvadores had that spectacular game on the world stage in the U17 game, while Smith is not well known outside Australia, so she will be harder to evaluate by the American talent scouts. But yes, if they evaluate her fairly and make her a 98 then we will have a top twenty class at least, perhaps better.

For those of you who closely watched WBB in the 1990s, what kind of offense did we play?Â

We ran like crazy. Of course the skill of the game is far better today.
Trivia: Who won the first ever College Women's basketball game? What was the score? Who lost?

2-1 Stanford over UCB, in 1896. I remember reading somewhere (Women's Sports and Fitness magazine??) something about UCB not wanting to appear in public with less than full 1896 dress. But what I really want to know is who won the game between UC and Miss Head's School in 1892.

Running could mean getting the ball quickly down the court. No way Tara ever plays the Westhead shoot and then no defense becuase we await your next shot.  I would never call Westhead's O up tempo, way more than that.Â

Brief digression, but did you see Duke got a 5th commit for the Class of 2015 and it's another guard??
They have FOUR guards signed up for next year's class.

Tara Vanderveer, much like Gary Patterson awith TCU football, brought in a totally new offense in 2014, going against their respective historical grains. The results:
TCU among highest scoring teams in CFB. Stanford women's hoops knocks off the insufferable Geno Auriemma and his UConn women hoopsters, snapping a 47-game win streak.
Good coaches do change their ways. Never imagined seeing a Stanford women's hoops team win with superior guard play. They absolutely did tonight. Just fantastic coaching by Tara V.!

I realize that there might have been a veiled reference to the football program, but to be completely fair to OutsiderFan, he never mentioned our football program, and did celebrate Vanderveer for what she's done; at least that's how I read " Never imagined seeing a Stanford women's hoops team win with superior guard play. They absolutely did tonight. Just fantastic coaching by Tara V.!"

I'd be happy if Shaw could change his QB recruiting/coaching ways and get a "spread" QB (not Shaw's philosophy) to use the speedsters we have in the backfield and WR corps. Comfort zones are zones of decay.
