Omitting Mathias robs this ballot of all credibility. Mathias gets on the ballot for greatest all around athletes that ever lived anywhere. When you think of the greatest all around athlete that ever lived, the first name that comes to mind is Jim Thorpe. Mathias is the 2nd name.

You have to be the youngest-ever winner of an Olympic T&F medal. Oh wait...

More on Eric Cross for you younger folks...
He was an incredible high schooler. Heck, he was the only guy I ever rooted for while he was at Stanford.
From a website dedicated to Alameda HS football - an amazing program "back in the day"...
---
The Running Backs:Â The 40/40 Club
Over the decades, Alameda has had some truly great teams, with many outstanding position players -- from QBs to lineman, and from linebackers to receivers -- but the Hornets have always been most noted for the outstanding stable of running backs they've fielded over the years; runners like Herman Pete (waiting for stats), Dan Reynolds (1,127-yds in '72), Mike Floyd (1,691-yds; 20 TDs in '78; Trib Player of the Year), Bob Arnold (1,201-yds in '80), Dan Nguyen (2,181-yds in 1993; All-State), Tavis V'ee (1,600-yds in '03; League MVP) and Jonathan Ve'e (404-yd game in '05; League MVP).
But out of all those all-league performers, two runners stand out amongst the rest:Â Eric Cross (#40) and Rob Kahuanui (#40).
Eric Cross...
Eric was a three sport star at Alameda; was a gifted receiver as well as running back, and was the cornerstone of the highest-ranked Hornet team of all-time in 1968.
1967 All ACAL 1st team
In the 1968 season:
Season scoring record 150-pts (25 TDs/9 games)
In The Big Game, ran for 115-yds and scored 4 TDs
All ACAL 1st team
All Northern California, First Team
1968 AHS football team was ranked #1 in the state and #8 in the nation.
1969/NorCal All Star Shrine Game, where he set a then Shrine Game record of 4 TDs
Played for:
Stanford University
Went to back-to-back Rose Bowls.
Holds Stanford record of most receptions in a game (14).
1974 - Played briefly with the Dallas Cowboys until he was accepted into Stanfords Graduate School of Education.
He was an incredible high schooler. Heck, he was the only guy I ever rooted for while he was at Stanford.

Rex Hudler, Bullard High, Fresno. Class of '78. All American Wide Receiver who caught 22 passes against Bakersfield East in a playoff game. Signed a LOI to play for Notre Dame...Four months later was the 18th overall pick in the MLB Draft by the Yankees. Signed for $125,000, which at the time was one of biggest bonuses ever signed by NY. Currently the color commentator for the KC Royals. Also a tremendous soccer player. Hudler, along with Ryne Sandberg are probably the two fastest white guys I have ever played with/against.

Another guy who was pretty good was Tom Brunansky. A highly recruited WR that signed a LOI to play for Stanford in '78. Like Hudler, he was also an outstanding baseball player and was selected as the 14th overall pick in the MLB draft. Had a decent major league career.

No Kristen Folkl? Or are these just California natives? If so, where was she from?

Folkl grew up and played high school ball in St Louis, Missouri .
In 1938 Neville Chamberlain declared "Peace in our time", Superman first appeared in Action Comics, Seabiscuit beat War Admiral ....... and C.a.l last won the Rose Bowl.

CORRECTION: It was Kristi Paaso that I competed with on American Gladiators, not Kristin Folkl (sorry, mixed up my Kristi/Kristin + Weird Last Name With Odd Letter Repetition Stanford Volleyball players)
Time to share a Kristin Folkl Kristi Paaso memory. During my junior year, Kristin Folkl Kristi Paaso and I both competed as contenders on the American Gladiators Live Tour at the Cow Palace. I was a fit, agile, and muscular 165 lb gymnast/cheerleader but nowhere near as big as the 250 lb Gladiators (who were frequently former pro football players). As such, I did well in Assault (the obstacle course), the Wall (rock climbing), and then got completely destroyed in Powerball (where you try to dunk balls into a container while the Gladiators tackle you). At one point, Tower actually picked me up and threw me over his shoulder onto the ground. That hurt.
Kristin Folkl Kristi Paaso on the other hand was a volleyball player and actually bigger than the female Gladiators. When it came to Powerball, she manhandled them, at least one time simply plowing right over the Gladiator in her way. She wound up winning the women's division (but couldn't accept the prizes due to NCAA regulations). It was mighty impressive. I'm also amazed that her coach allowed her to compete in something that physically brutal.
