Came across this analysis:
Quote:56 quarterbacks have led 125 drives in the playoffs in which:
It was the fourth quarter or overtime;
The drive ended with under a minute left to play;
And the offensive team was either tied or trailed by 7 points or fewer going into the drive.
Of those 125 drives, only 50 (or 40%) saw the offensive team score what they needed to either tie the game or take the lead. Great QBs tended to have better success rates than average in those situations; Tom Brady, for instance, went 5-for-11 (46%), while Drew Brees went 3-for-6 (50%) and Aaron Rodgers was 3-for-4 (75%). Josh Allen and Jeff Garcia each went a perfect 2-for-2 in their drives.
But only one QB has been an absolute outlier of perfection in this statistic:
Unfortunately, it was the guy the Niners were playing against on Sunday.

Along those lines, Shanahan has stated that he took the ball first because each team was only guaranteed one series and the third series was sudden death and he wanted the ball for the third series. Mahomes said it would never have gotten to that point because if the 49ers had scored a TD with a conventional extra point, then KC would have driven for a TD and gone for two points and the win. Which Mahomes, most likely, would have gotten, based on the above.

How did Shanahan do a “terrible job”
He didn’t fumble on the first drive. He didn’t have back-to-back penalties, which took them out of their second drive. He didn’t have a punt hit him in the ankle and then not cover up. He didn’t get an xtra pt blocked He didn’t miss his blocking scheme on the key play in overtime which was a touchdown, but for the screw up. He didn’t fail to stop the Chiefs on final drives. Twice.
Shanahan didn’t lose this game. Frankly, the players really didn’t either. They played their guts out. They got beat. Because they couldn’t handle Mahomes. Which puts them in good company.
But it’s always the coach. Shanahan is one of the best coaches in the NFL. One of the most respected. One of the best offensive minds. But when they lose, it’s his fault. Always the case.
By the way, Wilks was dumped in part for the same reason Kapler was. The players didn’t believe in him. Bosa made that clear what he threw him under the bus.

Then the take is - doesn’t matter what they did. Mahomes was going to beat them. Shanahan’s decision was logical and defensible. Particularly when you add that the defense had just been on an 11 play drive. And needed the rest.
I didn’t think about the third drive in real time. Obviously the staff had done some analysis. Right move? Wrong move? To me that’s not the question. Was it thought out. Yes. Is it logical. Yes. They lost so all us folks, sitting comfortably on our tush can point and say - “bad”.

I'll respond to your comments, then give you the last word. I know having the last word is important to you, so it's all yours...
Forget about losing his third Super Bowl with a double digit lead. Put that to the side for the moment.
Shanahan hired every coach and every player. He has the ultimate responsibility. When he hired Wilks, he knew he was unfamiliar with the defensive system, and that he concentrated on DBs when the 49er defense is based on DL first, LBs second, and DBs third. Ditto the special teams coach, ditto hiring Moody as the kicker. And his unceremonious dispatch of Wilks reminds me of Eddie DeBartolo's "He's gone" comment on Marc Trestman, after Trestman's offense finished third in the NFL in points scored (and first in the NFL his prior year), but was unceremoniously dismissed by the 49ers owner.
Wilks' defense gave up 19 points in regular time. During the season, 11 of KC's opponents gave up more, seven gave up less, two gave up the same. Wilks -- like Trestman -- ranked third in the NFL in points allowed. Wilks did good things, he shut down the Detroit Lions with halftime adjustments. Shanahan hired and managed him. That's on Shanahan. And I'll use your points...Wilks didn't injure Greenlaw or Hufanga, or draft or trade for the players on defense. He coached who he was given, including the 49ers' DBs. He wasn't responsible for the OT coin-flip strategy, that was on Shanahan.
Shanahan's juggernaut offense scored 19 in regulation against the Chiefs. Eight teams scored more against the Chiefs this season. I would have expected more than 19 from Shanahan's high powerd offense with high powered players. It wasn't Wilks' choice to abandon the run in the 3rd quarter, and he didn't let an extra point be blocked. He didn't blow protection on Purdy's last pass, that was an OL hired by Lynch and Shanahan and given the starting assignment and coached by a Shanahan-hired and managed coach.
And special teams, including the hiring and management of the coach, is on Shanahan.
Wilks has been scapegoated by a coach who can't win the Big One.
Now you can have the last word. I won't respond.

Wilks wasn't the sole reason they lost the game. Nor was he the main reason. However, he's not being scapegoated. The writing was on the wall for quite some time that he wasn't a fit with the team. Just listened to a guest talking head on KNBR who said that Wilks's departure wasn't a surprise and was a long time in the making. . . .
Blame? What's the point? There's lots to go around and as I've worried about all season, the O-line was suspect. They certainly proved the point in the Super Bowl. Talent? Block schemes? I've no idea, but probably both. . . .
Five years ago, Reid couldn't win the Big One, either. Wasn't until Mahommes third year, correct. I hope Shanahan follows. . . .

The game wasn’t about either Shanahan or Reid, it was about Mahomes. He is on a pace to be listed with Brady and Montana as one of the best big game QB’s in history.
Coaches can only put players in a position to be successful. They cannot execute the play calls. On the fateful third down in OT, the defensive call was correct. However, Burford freelanced thus allowing Jones to pressure Purdy into an incompletion. You can’t put that on a coach. It was a mistake made “in the moment” by a player. No amount of coaching can entirely eliminate those kinds of errors.
Heck, if Feliciano had not been injured, maybe he would have been in the lineup instead of Burford and the outcome of the play would have been different.
Regardless, I still think KC would have won because I believe they would have gone for 2 following their TD and there was no stopping Mahomes at that point.
As Purdy matures, I think he has the potential of being a premier QB under Shanahan’s tutelage. That is what SF needs to put themselves in a position to finally crest the mountain.
Lastly, one overlooked play that would have had a significant influence on the outcome was the near miss on the attempt to block the long KC FG. It was a low kick and, on replay, appeared to be inches from being blocked. What could been…………

A few thoughts based on the game and reading the thread:
1. Luck/fate play a big role in every football game. The better you are, the more you can overcome things that don't bounce your way. We played well enough to win, and with the exception of the Chief's fumble and their third down hold (which wouldn't be a factor if we won in regulation), had most of the bounces go their way. We can certainly pick fault with Shanahan, Purdy, Wilks, etc for why we did not put the game away to the point where that luck was less of a factor, but it's hard to wholly lambast a coaching staff and team that both got too the superbowl and was in a position to win the game.
2. Wilks defense played well in the superbowl, but was atrocious on the final two drives. Mahomes may be the GOAT, and there is no shame in losing to him. But there is a lot of shame in giving a mile of cushion (without disguising the coverage) on 2nd and 14 and 3rd and 6 when they are definitely going for it on 4th down. The pre-snap look was so bad Kyle had to call a timeout to get into a different play, and he should have. This is not nor should it be why wilks was fired.
3. Wilks defense was a disappointment throughout the year. Depending on the measure you use, we went from a top 1-2 defense last year to a ~10th ranke defense this year, despite relatively good health and adding Hargrave. This matched the eye test. We had a lot of games where we struggled to stop the run and mid-range passing game, and it was only when our excellent offense built up big leads that our defense was able to turn it up once their offense became one dimensional. We very rarely disguised coverages or lined up in ways to show something other then our base look, except for the well publicized cover 0 blitzes he liked to run at the weirdest times, again with no attempt to disguise it. If you show a good QB like Stafford or Burrow exactly what you are running, he's going to have answers for it.
Our D-line in particular underperformed, partially since we moved away from a lot of the wide-9 principles/stunts that had worked well for us, instead just lining up and playing straight up the vast majority of the time.
4. Our offense was awesome this year. We were the #9 DVOA offense of the last 40 years. This was done without an elite O-line, though with great skill players. Shanahan and Purdy deserve a hell of a lot of credit for that.
5. Our offense showed some major deficiencies during the super bowl. The QBschool breakdown showed some glaring examples (and he has been harping on this all year) of our offense lacking good answers for blitzers and having blocking schemes that will often have the QB throwing hot away from the free runner, rather then towards it. Spags magnified these issues. On a lot of plays where we struggled, it was because they brought pressure and Purdy had no where to go.
Purdy didn't have his best game, he had a bit of happy feet which caused him to miss a few throws he could have made, but was put in a lot of difficult situations due to pressure and O-line screw ups. Both big 3rd downs at the end of the game would have been big plays, but he had no time for the route to develop. Overall a B- game that was good enough to win.
Their top DBs were awesome. Deebo in particular just got abused and could generate 0 seperation for most of the game. Deebo's film was just infuriatingly brutal. He showed no effort in the Freaking super bowl. Even our double pass touchdown almost didn't happen since Deebo whiffed his block. Some of our success was using motion and scheme to get Aiyuk off of one of their top 2 DBs. We should have gone to that more. in 2 years when the salary cap crunch really hits, Deebo needs to be the odd man out IMO.

Niners are the second-best squad in football but less than the sum of their parts.. Point is, for all their brilliance the Chiefs coulda been had. When KC was wobbly and slip-slidin' (Kelce's altercation w/Reid spoke volumes about their state of mind) bewildered SF could not deliver the
coup de grace.

If the 49er defense holds on 4th and 1 and the Niners win the Super Bowl, does Wilks get fired? Saleh's defense gave up 31 to KC four years ago, Wilks' defense gave up 19 in regulation.

Great. Hope they can fix the 20th-ranked OL issues, the 3 for 12 3rd down conversions, figuring out a way to pay for Aiyuk and the special teams fiascos. Cause those coaches are still there. And the 49ers led the NFL in interceptions with 22, most since they had 23 in 2011. I'm guessing their former DC/defensive backfield specialist had a little bit to do with that. We'll see if they exceed that number next year.

Pretty good article in The Athletic on Wilks. Just a bad fit. The Niners have run the same defense for years. Heavy cover 3. Based on what Seattle did defensively for years. Wilks was not well versed in that defense when he came to SF.
In the past, Niners built defense from the d-line back. Wilks builds from the d-backs to the front.
He also had a different personality - not as fiery.
And watching their defense this year, it was obvious it wasn’t clicking. They were poor against the run, especially last half of the season. Niners had been very stout against the run for years. It was one of their hallmarks. And they couldn’t get off the field. One of the worst defenses in football on 3d down.
Wilks is a good defensive coach. He just wasn’t a good fit.
And yes, if they won SB I still think he gets fired. This was a season long issue. The Niners defense underperformed most of the year. IMO, he didn’t get fired cause they lost SB.
Personnel wise, I agree Mick. Niners need to improve their o-line. And I’d add - their bd-backfield. Especially safeties.

I agree with Bob. Regardless of the outcome of the games, Wilks was toast for reasons Shanahan cited in his press conference (Shanahan wants the D coached from front to back, Wilks coached from back to front).

Totally agree with all of that. He should never have been hired in the first place. And that's on Shanahan...and I really, really like Shanahan. He makes mistakes sometimes, and that one was a doozy.
Saw an article listing 11 potential defensive coordinators, 1/2 of whom are comfortable with a 3-4 versus the 4-3 that the 49ers use. They won't get a call. Shanahan will likely try to recreate Saleh or Ryans.
Read an interesting comment on Shanahan the other day, a pseudo-comparison of Shanahan and Walsh...gist of which was that Walsh had the flexibility to fit his system to his personnel, while Shanahan can only have personnel who can thrive within his rigid system, hence his long obsession with Kirk Cousins, the perfect QB for his system. Not sure if it's correct or not, but it resonated.

Agreed on this point in particular. The 49ers were 27th in the NFL in preventing 3rd down conversion in 2023 and 13th in 2022. They were 20th in 2021, and third in 2020 and second in 2019 (when they had DeForest Buckner). Saleh did a fantastic job, Ryans not quite as good. Maybe wait a year and Saleh will be looking for a DC job again...Saleh took a 2-14 Jets team, went 4-13 his first year and has had two 7-10 years in a row. This is a make or break year for him, I think. His defense with former 49er Jeff Ulbrich has been strong enough (12th in 2023), but his offense is hurting. CBS Sports ranked him the third most vulnerable head coach in the NFL.

End on some agreement!!
I feel for Saleh. Jets have been a sh-t show for a long long time.
