This is great! Modern times in a nutshell - Redrum - 03-11-2014

The discussion of what a guy's Twitter feed background is nearly as long as the discussion on the coach himself.    Why don't we skip the long search for qualified  coaches and just raid nearby Twitter for our football staff?

Re: Akina to Stanford - FarmBoy - 03-11-2014

I've been doing a project for work on "Big Data," which is essentially the field of using all of the information that is now readily available to predict outcomes. Google, for example, is able to predict where flu outbreaks are likely to occur based on the search terms being used in specific locations. I wonder if you could use information from twitter to better predict what athletes will commit to which schools, who will become a star player, who is an academic/legal liability, etc.

Hey, I can predict that too by which I turn when I blow my nose in the morning.
The prediction part is easy.

... Actually, in Google's case it reads as if they can predict where flu outbreaks have already broken out.

I've noticed they are also very good at predicting what items I just bought so they can flood me with ads for things I don't need anymore.

The idea here is to help "seeing like a state" -- i.e. to help big institutions predict when the flu has broken out. Individual flus aren't terribly interesting; a big outbreak or pandemic is worth deploying resources to combat.

Anyway you can probably use some of that Twitter data for your advantage -- I'm thinking the "following" list would be highly predictive.

A division controller I worked for many years ago had a poster in his office with the "rules of forecasting," of which the first was "Forecasting is difficult, especially when it concerns the future," but my personal favorite was "If forced to forecast, give them a number or give them a date, but don't ever give them both." I kept that in mind a few years later when I became the planning manager for the division (but had a hard time implementing it).

It's the offseason.  Things can get weird.

I like the hire a lot although I am concerned that we didn't quite replace the dynamic recruiting capabilities of the coaches we lost.

I'll wait before jumping to this conclusion.  I would assume that Akina has extensive connections in Texas, one of the hotbeds of HS talent (along with California and Florida), and if he can walk into a recruit's home and start talking about all the DBs he has worked with who are now, or who have recently been, in the NFL, I would think that at least the DB recruits would be impressed.  I worried, too, when Taggart left a couple of years back, but we seem to have carried on pretty well.

AZ (10+ years at UA) and HI (class of '74, Punahou) would seem to be natural recruiting bases for Akina as well.  and although UT did not recruit much beyond TX, they regularly plucked kids from LA and OK.

Speaking of recruiting, who will be our recruiting coordinator?

I LOVE it! (Part Deux) "Changing his background" - Redrum - 03-13-2014

Not only is the Twitter stuff persisting,  but when I read the part about "changing his background" all I could think about was :  " What do you expect him to do?  Delete Univ. of Arizona (or Texas) from his resume and  from then on deny  he ever coached there?"  This blurring of the line between the real and virtual worlds is simply... marvelous.

Why not? One of our former head coaches did it after leaving LSJU... ;)
