Akina to Stanford
03-09-2014, 04:21 PM
This is a wonderful hire for Stanford! Also he was linked to the same job at Cal, so that makes it even better...

This should help with several highly-rated DB recruits who began to waver slightly after Mason left to Vandy. Very nice addition!
If I had a dollar every time I was distracted, I wish I had some ice cream.

Akina also is from Hawai'i, so he may help in assembling our Hawaiian Defensive Line Voltron.

More excited about his Texas connections than his Hawaii ones.
He won't have to introduce himself anytime we go looking for Texas HS talent.

What is hilarious is that the bears are utterly blinded to reasons why Akina might have spurned them. They assume that it is money (it might be), and one poster had the insight to know that we could probably offer him housing. But did it ever occur to them that Akina might not have wanted to go to Cal because a) they suck, and who wants to be tainted with a stint in that fetid place, while b) Stanford is coming off 4 consecutive BCS bowls and has a proven recent track record, c) who knows how much longer Sonny Dykes, while to the extent that there has been any speculation behind Shaw it has been whether he goes to the NFL c) Stanford has a really good record getting assistant coaches and coordinators moving up the career ladder and d) Cal sucks.

Here's an article when Strong took over at Texas and Akina was let go with comments of love from his former players:
http://insider.espn.go.com/blog/colleges...-departure
This is a big coup for Shaw & Co. and will help solidify the upward trajectory we've been on with DBs. With Sherman and now Akina we could become a destination for great DBs.

Don't teams running up tempo offenses have an uphill battle in recruiting defensive coaches and players? I've heard some will spurn a place just because they know it's going to make their career stats look worse (more plays against, more yards against, more points against, etc.)

Akina speaks...texts:
And he's changed changed part of Twitter too: https://twitter.com/CoachAkina
Quote:"I really appreciated Coach Shaw and the Stanford staff," Akina said in a text message. "Excited to join a university so rich in tradition academically and athletically, much like the one I just left. Looking forward to being part of a great staff and continue to grow in this profession."

I wouldn't mind UT in the background, as long as it featured pictures of the DBs he's coached there.

I'm lost.Â
Coach Akina has a Stanford helmet as his twitter avatar and an aerial shot of a full to capacity Stanford stadium as his twitter background. It's hard to get more partisan than that.
A very recent change from Texas perhaps?Â

In 1938 Neville Chamberlain declared "Peace in our time", Superman first appeared in Action Comics, Seabiscuit beat War Admiral ....... and C.a.l last won the Rose Bowl.

It shows up on the desktop version of the site, but doesn't show up on the tablet version.

LC - look to the left and right of the aerial shot of Stanford stadium. His "wallpaper" is still Texas.

Thanks guys.Â
I see the vestigial Longhorn residue on my PC BUT Coach Akina is looking good on my IPhone! Maybe he's an IOS/new media kind of guy. He certainly is burning up his twitter feed with call outs. I guess that 'a what coaches do in the off season these days.

Well, you can't take all the Texas out of him, sorry to say.Â
You all teased us but suffered us, mostly gladly, as far as I can remember.
