I think so. Especially since a defensive touchdown on the opening drive is an automatic win.

i sure wish we had defended first! then we know we have to use 4 downs to go for a td

Great season.  Great game. My concern was Mahomes having ball and chance at end.  Didnt expect it twice.

Only reason I can think that they took ball first was defense had just been on.

That empty backfield set on first down time and time again.  With the league's OPOY lined up in the slot.  Jeez Kyle must have just been a coincidence we lost.

Those in-game injuries to Greenlaw, Deebo and Kittle didn't help.

At least Deebo and Kittle came back quickly.

How the hell do you take McCaffrrey as a run threat away again and again is beyond comprehension .

The d line actually stepped up tonight. The O-line, not so much. Lots of traded away picks that could have gone to solidify the line.

Niners played like they didn't have the leading rusher in the NFL.

The game was lost on defense.  The defense had their chance to stop Mahomes and win the game on KC’s last drive in regulation and again on the last drive of OT and failed twice.

He had 22 carries and 30 touches.  There was just that first couple 3d Q series where they threw 6 straight. Which was strange.

Deebo didn’t do anything, the hamstring didn’t help.  Kittle had 1 catch.  Chiefs did a great job of taking away the slants, drags etc. They also got in Purdy’s face a lot. They must have batted down about 4 passes.

They have a very very good defense.  Proved it tonight.

Agree on line play.

This is a hell of a well constructed roster.  No GM gets it right 100% of the time.

I’m old enough to remember that the knock on Andy Reid was that he could never win the big game.

The missed XP cost the win in regulation.

RE: leftcoast - needle - 02-11-2024

The game did not *really* start until the fourth quarter, and it felt to me like the Chiefs--Reid, Spags, Mahomes et al--just played with a superior level of confidence that mainly (only?) arrives after having won the damn thing before. I didn't see any hesitation in key moments, specifically when it came to coaching decisions. Certainly, the Chiefs weren't flawless. I think it was a mistake on their final drive in regulation to waste so much clock without calling a time out at about 30 seconds. But it also seemed like they were supremely confident they would win the game in OT.

I feel gutted for McCaffrey, whose fumble is leading off every highlights package I've seen tonight but who really played with a physicality tonight that shows a mental toughness. Fumbles happen to every running back who has ever lived, I think, and otherwise McCaffrey really showed out.

Kudos go to Justin Reid, whose nine combined tackles were second on the Chiefs. He was also credited for half a sack and a QB hurry, and he's clearly a key cog in what is an outstanding secondary. If there is an underrated sequence in this game, it is the Chiefs forcing a three-and-out after the Mahomes interception at the start of the third quarter.

I disagree.  Had KC been down by four, they would have played their hand differently when they got inside the SF 5 yard line.  And if they had still been faced with a fourth and goal, I highly doubt they would have kicked an FG close the gap to one point.

Yep.

Read Shanahans explanation on why they took ball.  He wanted third possession.  Makes sense actually.  Also on key third and 4 from the 9 McKivitz screwed up.  Kittle had edge rusher.  McKivitz moved out to block the edge.  Leaving a clear lane for Clark to get to Purdy.  Otherwise, that’s at least a first down.  Probably a TD.

RE: Super Bowl 2024 Thread - lex24 - 02-12-2024

It’s always the coach….

I fail to see how this one is on Shanahan.  I can quibble with his play calls to start second half.  But I think part of that is they had been so McCaffrey heavy in first half.

He had a great play call for the TD from Jennings.  Generally stuck to his game plan - didn’t abandon run.  Didn’t have a clock management issue.

The decision to take ball first in OT was quizzical to me at the time.  But his explanation that he wanted ball for third possession makes complete sense.  Especially when you add that defense had been on field at end of regulation. It’s not the same as college….l

Lot of mistakes that hurt.  Including CMacs fumble.  Back to back penalties on of all people, Williams on drive 2.  Greenlaws bizarre (and man I feel for him) injury.  The fluke punt fumble. Missed extra point.  And finally - the missed assignment from McKivitz on the 3d and 4 from the 9 in OT.  Right play call.  It was at least a first down if McKivitz slows Jones a count or two. But he moved outside to block the edge- which was Kittle’s assignment.  Jones had a free path.

https://www.nfl.com/videos/chris-jones-destructive-pressure-thwarts-49ers-third-down-attempt-at-td-in-ot

Chiefs interior line dominated.  D Backs were as advertised.  Deebo 3 catches on 11 targets.  Kittle one catch - 4 yards. CMac 160, but on 30 touches. Niners did not have usual YAC. Slants, drags etc were taken away. Tons of pressure up middle, which is hardest for a QB to handle.  Give credit to Chiefs very very good defense.

RE: Super Bowl 2024 Thread - BobK - 02-12-2024

Excellent post Lex. Really agree other than that wasn’t a fumble really as it hit a 49er in from of Ray Ray. Of course fall on the damn ball don’t try to pick it up
Great game almost perfect

RE: Super Bowl 2024 Thread - cardcrimson - 02-12-2024

Going into the game, the weakness of the Chiefs was allegedly their ability to stop the outside run. How many times did the Niners run outside? With McCaffrey, Deebo, and Aiyuk, one would have thought Shanahan would have called more to the outside. Did they run any jet sweeps?

I remember one jet sweep with Deebo. Chiefs were all over it and stopped it for a loss.

RE: Super Bowl 2024 Thread - jacket3ree - 02-12-2024

Niners lost to a team who played better when it counted. They lost because no lead was going to be safe, but a 7-point halftime lead was never going to hold, when they should have had at least two more scores at that point. The lost because they went 110 real minutes between first downs. That third quarter was awful. It was offense yesterday, not defense. Well, except for two horrible series at the end. They held the Chiefs to a single touchdown on a short field after McCloud didn't fall on the ball. The defense came to play, but you can't give it to Mahomes with that kind of time twice. Kansas City made mistakes, but SF never made them pay. The Niners paid for all of their mistakes and were lucky to be in overtime. Mahomes was so locked on to Kittle that he missed the wide open game winning touchdown with 0:07 on the clock.

And to humor my wife, who invented new swear words for holding, the one holding call on Kittle's backup (legit call) negated a first down that would have taken the clock down maybe below Mahomes safety levels at the end of regulation. Of course the Chiefs could hug and tug guys all game long with impunity.

They should have started the overtime on defense, but that's a coin flip and they still could have scored 6 and perhaps 7 (wild game for Moody) or stopped them. They had their chances - now it's 30 years and counting.....

They need to overhaul the offensive line.  Even Trent Williams was getting caved in all day.

Tough day across the street. (My office looks out on Levi's.)

Hope Shanahan isn't this century's Marv Levy.

Agree completely. A seven point lead never had a chance.

Not understanding Mahomes and Kittle. Kelsey?

You noticed that too. Whining about refs is useless, but there were some obvious and egregious no calls. . . .

Worrying about a potential third possession proved fruitless. Should have gone on D first.

The O-line had been questionable from the start. Played better during the season than I thought, but didn't play well when it mattered.

Ironically, this morning thought the same thing about the Bills and Levy. Shanahan is halfway to Levy, Reeves, and Grant . . . .

Win or lose, I would be rather pleased if he makes two more Super Bowl appearances while I am still compos mentis.
