Oh, "We'll Get Fooled Again" allright
02/08/10 at 8:35am

Who'd a thunk that Janet Jackson's breast would be the high water mark of Super Bowl halftime shows?  Although it took a few more years of aging rock stars to show us the truth.  First Springsteen then some cover band pretending to be The Who.

The half-time show of two remaining members of The Who  was like watching a slow motion train wreck but without the gripping fascination.  These guys would lose a HS battle of the bands.  They once caught lightning in a bottle, now it just makes you cringe.

But we have a mission:  the rockstars of the past are dying off.  Like veterans of WWII they're testament is being wiped out of our cultural memories.   We must get more of them to their revival before there's no one left.   My nominees:  The Turtles  (I Can't See Me Lovin' No Body But You)  or  MC Hammer  (just to see him blow out his knees trying even one of his moves).  Who else is out there waiting for Super Bowl fame?

Whoever needs to promote a new project around February, 2011.

Don't know what The Who was hawking, but Bruce set the release of his new album last year to coincide with his appearance on SB XLIII.  It's not about entertainment.  It's all about product placement.

Let's see ... they've covered the 80's with U2, Tom Petty and, memorably, Janet Jackson/Justin Timberlake so it's time for them to take a bold step  - and move into the 90's.

Perhaps Greenday singing something from Dookie?   Hey, if "Welcome to Paradise" is classic enough for the Stanford Band, it's old enough for the Superbowl set.   But then you start to imagine what Billy Joe might say (and do) on a Superbowl stage - a 7 second delay couldn't cover all the possibilities.  Nah, they won't go for that until the average age of GD hits 65 itself.

I'm guessing they ask Beyonce or perhaps Whitney Houston next.   Or, turn to the crossover Country Set.   I could see Shania Twain, Faith Hill and Tim McGraw or even a move into <gasp> the next millenium working out with an invite being sent to Taylor Swift.

But who should they really ask?   The original football rowdy himself - Hank Williams Jr.   But only when the Incomparables turn it down as selling out after the SB Powers that Be refuse to remove Scott Fujita from the field.

From a separate thread that referenced Bill Simmons' column, I found his predictions for halftime entertainment through the rest of the decade.

Quote:
2011: Beyonce and Jay-Z
2012: Bruce Springsteen and John Cougar Mellencamp
2013: Ayla Brown (the daughter of our new president, former Cosmo model Scott Brown)
2014: U2 and Pearl Jam
2015: Britney Spears Woods
2016: Snoop Dogg, Jay-Z and Kanye West (just released from jail)
2017: Justin Timberlake and Ayla Brown
2018: John Mayer and Taylor Swift Woods
2019: Coldplay
2020: The Dave Matthews Band with special guest Carrie Underwood Woods

But wasn't from Cretin-Derham.  Some small town, Mahtomedi (?) MN.

Below the neck, Arlich was a beast.  Above the neck he wasn't cut out to play up in Div.1 football.  Not an intelligence thing.  More of a motivation/get-your-mind-right thing.   Saw something on some networking site a while ago.  He does state he graduated from Stanford and now has a couple of career things going.  Never cared enough to even check out the Alumni Assoc. and verify.   If he did finish up at Stanford, good on him.

Right answer...wrong thread.  Huh Thanks for the info, though.

Thanks Robbie, with that I would have won my bet, if I could have found anyone to take it...

Well I wasn't fooled.  I knew that what's left of The Who would have at the least vocal difficulties recreating 1970s rock glory.  The only thing worse than aging rockers at halftime shows would be their only slightly less aged fans crowing about how awesome they were 'back in the day' in front of their ipod generation progeny. (Although I have an ipod; and The Who is on it.)

Since my HD 5.1 home theater let's me do a lot of different things at the same time (after all I installed it), we watched the half time show while needle dropped on my vintage version of "Who's Next".  So I don't know what y'all heard, but we heard Baba O'Reily and Bargain in all their original stereophonic awesomeness before commercial break. We made it all the way through side one before turning the game sound back on.  Sure, the windmills weren't in sync, but at least I didn't ruin all my childhood memories listening to Daltry try to hit the "yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah" before he got much older.

(I'm sure I fall well short of Townsend and Daltry on the sex, drug and rock 'n roll meters, so it actually sounds pretty good when I do it in the car.  With the volume way up. Cheesy)

I heard the halftime show was a vanguard '60s artist. But when I discovered it wasn't Lesley Gore, I lost interest.

By the way, TiVo says the halftime show started with strong viewer interest, but it quickly waned.

Lesley Gore probably hasn't fallen as far from her peak as The Who.

At least The Who had a peak.  Lesley Gore?  Lesley Gore couldn't carry Dusty Springfield's.....uh, OK, not that there is anything WRONG with that.

Everything was better when we were young, and getting older will only make that more true. Anyway, if you manage to play everything from Monterey Pop, to Woodstock, to Leeds, to Isle of Wight to a Super Bowl on AARP triple miles, you've done something right.

You just don't dig what we all say.....
